Conceptually that is the basis of the standard component structure of the CS.
Is there a way to "override" an Idoc Script function? We are using getRelativeUrl( ) all over our site. Currently, this will spit out a URL that looks something like this: /ucm/groups/ /documents/ / .

Oh sorry, I misread your original post.
I was thinking about creating slightly more friendly URLs that would be in the following structure: /download/ / .
Overrides are indeed possible.

I would then use an ASP.NET "handler" page to receive all these requests, and serve them up to the users as a byte stream. I obviously want to do this without changing every place on the site where I'm using the "getRelativeUrl()" function, so I thought if I could override it, it would be a convenient solution.
Yes, simply create your own idoc function (you'll need to know Java), name it the same, and then make sure your component load order is bigger/larger than sitestudio (set it to like 500).

Let me know if you have any thoughts. If it is possible, is there examples of doing something like this anywhere?

As to your specific example I do not know since I have not tried to research overriding that one. From its name it seems to be a Site Studio function which I would guess is an embedded java function that will be hard to override.
As to full function replacement that may be more difficult as some of the method calls are directly from Java in the core. so some specific functions will not be easily overridden.
