Western Digital currently lists the Extreme 400GB A2 microSDXC card on its SanDisk website without availability and price details; however, Tom's Hardware reports that the card will cost $300 USD.

As long as your device features a microSD-slot, there are now no excuses for running out of storage. Today, Western Digital introduced what is currently the largest capacity microSD memory card in the world: the SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I card with a whopping 400GB of storage space.
Memory manufacturer SanDisk has announced a new series of portable flash drives that feature a retractable, reversible connector that allows users to pair the stick with both USB Type-C and Type-A devices. The company suggests the dual compatibility of the Ultra Dual Drive USB Type-C will make it easier for smartphone users to transfer images and data from the phone to a computer, as well as offering a solution for expanding the storage memory of the device.

Once you do connect, you can view photos and do some elementary edits (crop, rotate, "enhance") but beyond that your options are extremely limited. Incredibly, you can't even zoom in on iOS, and on Android it zooms but only into the preview image. I had thought it would be useful to share shots quickly with assistants or friends, but what's the point if they can't do anything but perform the most cursory examination and tasks?

Yesterday, Western Digital announced plans to acquire SanDisk Corporation, a company that specializes in memory chips and SD cards. According to a statement released on Wednesday, Western Digital will purchase all of SanDisk’s shares in a deal totaling about $19 billion; a combination of both cash and stock will be paid.
The five companies believe that they each can make substantial contributions that, when combined, will enable them to start licensing the new secure memory technology early next year. The five companies expect to see adoption of flash memory products and various embedded flash memory solutions using this technology in the market in 2012.

It's safe to say you'll have to encounter some pretty extreme climatic conditions to bring these cards to their metaphorical knees. The Industrial SD and microSD cards can be used in temperatures ranging from -13°F to 185°F, while the Industrial XI and Automotive SD cards can take temperatures between -40°F and 185°F.
Parents or people whose devices are already filled to the gills with shows, pictures, podcasts and so on might appreciate these drives as a portable local server, but even then the cases where it's more convenient to use the SanDisk drives are few and far between.

The app itself is rather clunky, especially on iPad, where it routinely froze up or crashed while scanning for photos and failed to render previews for a couple hundred shots fresh off my DSLR. Canon has issued a warning to EOS-1D X II owners, noting a problem with file corruption that can occur when certain SanDisk CFast cards are used. Both Raw and JPEG files are affected, but the number of corrupted images varies according to the compression mode used. When shooting Raw, Canon recommends recording just one extra shot, but shooting small sized JPEGs will require 8 extra shots to protect other images on the card.
You can always use these drives for off-phone backup for your camera roll so you're covered in case of disaster. It's a little redundant with cloud backup, but could be good for a little extra peace of mind.

DPReview contacted Sony regarding the issue. A spokesperson for the company kept it short and vague, saying "our team is currently investigating the claims." We will update this article if any new information becomes available.
Leading motion picture equipment manufacturer ARRI, will be the first to implement CFast 2.0 as recording media in a camera. The new documentary-style ARRI AMIRA will record to in-camera CFast 2.0 cards, and ALEXA XT camera users will be able to use a new CFast 2.0 adapter, allowing ALEXA XT cameras, as well as ALEXA Classic cameras upgraded with the XR Module, to do the same. Stephan Schenk, general manager of ARRI’s camera and DI systems business unit said, "SanDisk’s new SanDisk Extreme Pro CFast 2.0 cards deliver tremendous performance, allowing professionals to record ProRes 4444 up to 200Fps with AMIRA, and up to 120Fps with ALEXA XT/XR cameras, on cost-effective recording media."
Earlier this month SanDisk also announced Extreme PRO SDHC/SDXC UHS-II cards, aimed at 4k video shooters, offering up to 250MB/s write speeds and transfer speeds of up to 280MB/s. Fujifilm's X-T1 is the first camera to offer UHS-II compatibility. The new cards will be available in April in 16GB to 64GB capacities carrying a MSRP of $119.99 to $299.99.

Basic operation works quite as advertised: by hitting the only button on the device, a wireless hotspot is created, to which you can connect your smartphone, tablet or PC. Then you'll need to launch SanDisk Connect, a free app for iOS and Android, which asks for a password (if you've set one) — and then boom, there's your media. You can upload new photos, view old ones or stream video and audio stored on the device.
Western Digital's CEO Stephen D. Milligan will serve as chief executive of the combined company, while SanDisk's President and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra will join WD's board of directors. Hard disk drive giant Western Digital has completed its acquisition of flash manufacturer SanDisk in a deal that will create a partnership that WD hopes will help it leap into the future of computer memory. The company announced plans to buy SanDisk last fall.
