Story kicks off with the mysterious murder of a senator bearing the marks of a Soviet assassin, who was long thought to be dead. To hunt down the killer, a retired CIA operative, who spent his career going toe-to-toe with his Soviet nemesis, is teamed with a young FBI agent.

Probably the worst film I've seen in over a decade. Completely pointless it being made

Its a cold war thriller brought up to date, clumsily constructed around a double twist.

It is appallingly written - the plot makes little sense and has plot hole after plot hole. Characters make correct conclussions from almost no evidence and seem to stumble from one leap of faith to another. Sometimes new storylines just pop into existence with no, or almost no, origin. Dialogue is cliche after cliche, lifted from cold war thrillers made when the cold war was still on 30 years ago. The storyline is confused and muddied

It has no redeeming features - the writing is poor, the directing is poor, the acting is poor

On a personal level, I found the pronunciation of 'Cash-us' really annoying. Is it an Americanism? I think the rest of the world says 'Kass-eus' I like the movie, let me say that first. The actors do a good job and there are some nice surprises that you don't see coming. There is a spoiler coming up here now so if you have not seen the film yet stop reading now.

When agent Ben Geary begins to suspect that Shepherdson is Cassius his friend tells him to use logic to determine if he is correct. He tells him that if he cannot prove that Sherpherdson is not Cassius then he has statistically proved that he is. I won't waste the time going into all the ways in which this logic is wrong. But just look at the factor he focuses on, i.e. whether Shepherdson was at the crime scenes (on the theory that Cassius would return to the scene to see what the investigators knew). Shepherdson was investigating Cassius and would clearly have gone to any crime scene he suspected Cassius was involved in.

But this is a small thing; the movie is still good, a lot of twists and surprises.

There is one more criticism I have of this film. None of these highly trained killers can shoot worth a damn. Like a "Training Day" for spy thrillers, The Double provocatively pairs Gere and Grace as a gray-green odd couple, only to unravel as the double-crossed absurdities pile up and the duo start trading bad Russian accents in a private Mexican standoff. Oh nyet you didn't!
