The quest to do this naturally involves a whole lot of acrobatic running, jumping, diving and navigating the colossal room-sized action-puzzles that are the hallmark of the Prince of Persia series. The difference this time around is that the prince won't be doing it alone. Elika will be following along behind him every step of the way, matching the nimble hero step-for-step and leap-for-leap. This leads to all sorts of interesting new "co-op" style moves the player will perform by triggering Elika's various magical abilities at the proper point. One of the first demonstrations of the Prince and Elika working together, for example, was an extended jump too far for the Prince to make on his own. He's "saved" by Elika's using a magical leap to catch the Prince by the hand and give him an extra boost to the other side,
After the first abortive attempt to resurrect Jordan Mechner's classic side-scrolling puzzle game ( Prince of Persia 3D ) turned into a disaster, one wouldn't have blamed developers for avoiding the franchise altogether. All credit to Ubisoft then for picking up the franchise in 2003, setting the Prince back on his oh-so-nimble feet and offering a great new entry in the series followed up by two terrific sequels. That's what made the E3 demonstration of the new Prince of Persia so special. Rather than endlessly milk the series until it's as dry and dusty as the Empty Quarter, they've decided to update the game with a new Prince, a new look, a whole new story, new additions to the gameplay, but the same commitment to elegant movement and presenting a beautiful puzzle box for players to open.
Prince of Persia.
In the same way, the game's storylines draw less obviously from the Arabian Nights and more from a popularized version of Zoroastrian mythology. The new Prince is no nobleman. Instead he's a wanderer, thief and vagabond who spends his days searching for treasure and his nights spending that same treasure on strong drink and even stronger women. When heading home after his latest adventure he gets caught in a fierce sandstorm that deposits him in a mystical Eden-like garden, which holds the Tree of Life at its center along with a mysterious girl named Elika. They're just in time to witness the destruction of the Tree and the subsequent release of Ahriman, the universal force of material corruption who begins to infest the garden. It now falls to the Prince and Elika to rise to the occasion and heal paradise.
As players proceed through the game, they'll be able to acquire magical glowing "Seeds of Life" that can be traded in for an increase in Elika's powers. In the demonstration level we watched, the walls of the garden area were liberally studded by large red jewels. When the Prince and Elika landed on a jewel, she could use her powers to rocket the pair a tremendous distance across the room. There were also blue gems on the walls she could not yet use. While we were given no details about how Elika would use these gems, it was stated that the power to use them would be one of those she would have to purchase.
Spiffy:
The first thing that jumps out at the player in the new Prince of Persia is the game's art style. Gone are the realistic stone piles and sharply-lit golden minarets of the previous games' pseudo-Arabian art style. The new game hearkens back to an older, more authentically "Persian" style of cool white marble and irregularly piled bricks and jagged, flowing lines reminiscent of handwritten brush strokes. The art style is complemented by an animation style that the developers refer to as "illustrative." It's not exactly a cel-shaded look as the game is fully 3D-modeled and has realistic lighting. Instead it's one with smoothly-filled solid color shapes outlined by ragged black outlines. The effect is to make the game look like a watercolor painting.
