Do you ever wish that you could block out all of the noise in your office? Do you ever close your eyes and imagine that you are at the edge of the water hearing the waves gently lap against the beach? If the answer is yes to either of these questions, then this is the program for you.

For years there have been companies that sell ambient sounds on CD or even special clock radios that play digitized versions of crickets chirping in the night. Of course, in order to enjoy the sounds you would either have to have a CD player at work or bring in your alarm clock. Now the people at Synthetic Productions have come up with a solution to this problem: EarSaver.

EarSaver is a virtual ambient soundscape player. What does that mean? It means that EarSaver uses an audio synthesizer to play sounds such as Ghost Fire (a crackling fire with new age music in the background), New Lands (calming music with other sound effects), The Rain (sounds of a rainstorm with synthesized tones in the background), Little Stream (sounds of a stream), and more. The Ambionic soundscapes are made up of natural sounds with musical textures blended in to create a perfect "Virtual Audio Environment." The best part about the sounds is that they are digital and sound like the real thing.

Using EarSaver
In order to use EarSaver all you need is a computer-- either Mac or PC--some free memory, a sound card, and 5 MB of available hard drive space. That's it. Upon installation, EarSaver displays a console that has buttons similar to a CD player or cassette deck. If you want to, you can begin enjoying the sounds immediately just by clicking on the "Play" button. It's just that simple.

The sounds themselves have different playing times ranging from 35 minutes and 50 seconds for "Little Stream" to "Swamp Mist," which comes in at 24 minutes and 14 seconds.

EarSaver comes standard with nine tracks and two albums respectively. A track is a specific sound clip, such as "Little Stream," and an album is a list of tracks. You can also make your own album, called "Personal Album." You make your Personal Album by going to an album and then clicking on the track that you would like to add to your personal album. At that point you click on "Add to personal album." You can add as many tracks as you want to your Personal Album in any order you want. In addition, you can choose to play the tracks randomly, or even click on repeat and specify the repeat interval.

EarSaver has built-in buffering to keep your sounds from being interrupted by activities that use your CPU's processing power. You can also change the quality of the audio so that the program uses less memory.

If you get tired of looking at the same old interface, you can choose from one of three (in the registered version). You can choose Futura (a funky, futuristic looking console), Shortwave (an old-style radio console), and Micro (a smaller console that still has all of the same features readily accessible).

The best part of EarSaver is that it delivers CD-quality sound without tying up your CD-player or relying on an Internet connection. For example, as I write this review I'm listening to EarSaver, running a log report for the website, and checking my e-mail--all without hearing any dropout from EarSaver. That's a quality program!

Ratings Defense
For Quality, I give EarSaver a solid 5 out of 5 Geekheads. I still can't believe that this is a product put out by a small developer with no giant staff to help debug the technology. In addition, the technology is all proprietary! I also really like the interfaces and the fact that the developer designed the program to be scalable. For instance, if you want to download more sounds (when they are made available) the interface will automatically recognize the new sounds without any additional tweaking required.

For Geekness, I give EarSaver another solid 5 out of 5 Geekheads. I can't believe how much customizing you can do. For example, if you are on a computer that only outputs mono instead of stereo, you can modify the preferences. Or, if you happen to be running a ton of applications and really could use all the memory you can free up, you can customize EarSaver to use less of a buffer or play in a lower sound quality mode. The Geekness doesn't stop there! How about being able to change it to play in either 8-bit or 16-bit or tweak the output quality from 11 KHz all the way up to 44 KHz.

For only $29.95 you can't miss with EarSaver. If you want to block out the noise of your office or would like to sleep better at night, download EarSaver and see for yourself what the future of ambient sound is all about!

One more thing: if you are hesitant about shelling out $29.95, a free demo is available for download at www.earsaver.com. I downloaded and was hooked!
