Eight Lord Hanuman Mantras With Benefits and Meanings

When a pious Hindu thinks about devotion and courage, a name that springs easily to mind is Lord Hanuman. Hanuman, the Monkey God, is well-known even to a small child who probably grew up watching episodes of Veer Hanuman on TV.

Hanuman was the faithful and loyal companion of Lord Rama and helped him to recover Sita, whom Ravana had abducted. He was also Rama’s army commander. He is Lord Vayu's (Wind God)son, though this is probably in a metaphorical sense. His mother was Anjana, an apsara or celestial maiden who took birth as a monkey due to a sage’s curse.

When King Dasaratha (father of Lord Rama) of Ayodhya performed Putrakameshti Yagna for progeny, a pot of kheer emerged from the sacrificial fire. When the kheer was being distributed to the king’s wives, a kite snatched some of the kheer and dropped it in the forest where Anjana was doing penance. It was Vayu who caught the kheer and dropped it in Anjana’s hands. She ate it and later gave birth to Hanuman. All this happened by divine ordinance.

Hanuman has many names like Anjaneya, Bajarangabali, Maruti, Mahaveer, Anjani Putra, Pavanputra, etc. He is known for his strength, agility, valor, and learning. Many believe him to be an avatar of Lord Shiva.

He also symbolizes devotion and dedication. He carried Rama and Lakshmana on his shoulders when they were looking for Sugreeva (the king of Vanaras) in Kishkindha. He leapt over the ocean and, braving many hazards, reached Lanka, where Sita was held captive.

His devotees believe that worshipping Hanuman will help them imbibe his qualities like courage and strength. As he had helped Shani or Saturn once, they also believe that he can protect them from Shani’s negative influence. People who lack self-confidence, courage, and strength worship him. Chanting the Hanuman Chalisa, a hymn dedicated to him, can protect one from enemies, negative energies, evil spirits, etc.
