Plays somewhat like the old Zelda 2 from 1987 only it gets to benefit from having no hardware limitations.

This is a really great title that is sadly overlooked!. One of the best sidescrolling adventures I've ever played, and one of the few games where I strived to collect everything. It's challenging, has plenty of secrets, and is addicting as hell.. This game is really fun. It's graphics and music fit the gameplay exactly. It is similar to NES games, so you just load up the game and start playing. It isn't going to waste your time with tutorials or explainations of what most stuff does. The game is pretty large with many optional areas and it is somewhat challenging, but not so hard that any normal person wouldn't be able to complete the game in a reasonable number of times.. really wanted to like this game, but man is it poorly designed. I get that they wanted to do the overworld thing and tease future abilities by blocking progress, but they do it ALL THE DAMN TIME. Literally every stop on the map when you start the game with the exception of the village is a progress blocker, so you go in- turn around and leave. With no explanation.

There might be a really solid game behind the first 30 minutes- but I don't even care enough to find out anymore.. The decision to make you lose experience when dying is what made me stop playing the game. Why punish exploration? It doesnt just take away the experience since the last save, but more! In a game where you are never told what to do, exploration should be expected and not punished. It is hard but not in a "dark souls" way, just in a non justified way that destroys a good game in my opinion. Elliot Quest makes it no secret that it wants to be like a number of classic NES-era gems.

It accomplishes its goal extremely well.

I'm a big fan of the Metroidvania genre, and Elliot Quest delivers. Apart from discovering new areas to explore, it's deeply satifying to find alternate uses and effects for the items/spells you collect. Not just as a puzzle soliving element, but also the way certain spells will completely overpower certain enemy types (fire on a blue slime~).

Visually, it does a great job with pixel graphics. More specifically, it does a fantastic job with colors! The palette range is varied, giving each and every area a unique feel from the others. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any color that isn't used in full array.

This isn't to say it's without flaws - there's the occasional glitchy moment or questionable game design, and the story is so loosely presented that it feels like nothing more than a means to progress the action.

However, these errors are far and few between. At the time of writing, this game is an absolute steal at %50 off. Even at full price, it's more than worth it.

And in classic NES fashion. You might want to make notes and sketch out your own map~
