mankind should strive to ensure that its mark in the world is a positive one.
Humans have had a larger effect on the environmental surroundings than every other species within the Earth’s history. Our behaviour, unique motivations and means of thinking have altered so many aspects of the earth, for both better as well as for worse. The good news is that individuals are realising why is environmental sustainability important, and a whole lot of humanity’s bad actions towards the environmental surroundings could be undone by the same ingenuity that led us to this point to begin with. One strategy that is developed by people would be to rewild large pieces of land, for instance the project headed by Anders Holch Povlsen. By keeping human activity in these areas to a minimum, nature is allowed to come back to a situation just like just what it had been before industrialisation. Generally speaking, these areas can tolerate small amounts of contact from people, meaning that it will be possible of these areas to become centres of ecotourism. This can let the projects to be self-sustainable and become more attractive projects for individuals to invest in.
The interaction between mankind and the environment has only really become negative in the last couple hundred years or so. Before industrialisation, as well as before urbanisation and farming, individuals and nature possessed a far more harmonious relationship. While it very easy to genuinely believe that people will be the supply of the environment’s problems, the truth is that human society can also be a part of the solution. This is also true when indigenous countries and historic techniques are supported, allowing humanity to play an active part in nature’s healing in normal everyday life. Many organisations, like the one by Dr Lisbet Rausing, that not only act as environmental organisations but also support many projects involving individuals and local communities, like funding environmental sustainability courses. Therefore, ordinary people, including people which do not hold environmental sustainability jobs, could have a greater role to play in the planet’s recovery and also have less incentive to partake in actions that harm the environmental surroundings.
Most of the largest environmental initiatives come in a top-down direction, and therefore a lot of them are devised by large international organisations and also the governments of effective nations. That is mostly a good thing, because the targets that need to be achieved for a lot of of the largest ecological problems, like climate change, are so huge that worldwide collaboration is needed. However, the entire world is a diverse place, and a lot of countries have actually different environmental needs that can be missed by big worldwide methods and directives. Because what is environmental sustainability if it is not intended for everyone? This is why there has been organisations established, for instance the one that Violeta Mariana Alvarez works together with, which are dedicated to the needs of one country. This helps to ensure that there are no gaps in the international effort to help the surroundings, and also the sounds of local people are more inclined to be heard.
