Far Cry New Dawn returns players to the rural lands of Hope County

Far Cry New Dawn’s visual take on the post-apocalypse is less Mad Max and more Willy Wonka. The game takes place 17-years after the events of Far Cry 5, which ends with global nuclear apocalypse. The catastrophe left behind a trail of smoke and ash and drove people below ground. But life always finds a way. And when the people of Hope County emerge from their bunkers, they’re shocked by what they see. The nuke that decimated their corner of Montana must have been packed with plutonium and skittles. After years of gloom, the landscape bounced back and respawned as the result of a scientific phenomenon known as a super bloom.

It’s been seventeen years since the bombs fell. Hope County is an oasis in a nuclear wasteland, its survivors grouping together in a place called Prosperity. A group of raiders called Highwaymen scour the countryside, as they often do in post-nuclear situations. Led by twins Mickey and Lou, these murderous bikers force all the remaining denizens of this small town to stand together and ward off the attack. After arriving on a doomed train ride, you join up, organize the resistance, and set your sights on the twins.

Previous Far Cry games, like Far Cry 5, have included ways to temporarily give your character increased abilities. But giving your character a selection of powers that can be used permanently throughout the game reminded me a lot of the Xbox port of the original game. Far Cry Instincts was a modified port of the first game in the franchise. It ditched the huge maps found in the original PC version for more linear worlds and also changed the storyline to include new superhuman abilities called “Feral Powers”. Taking over Highwaymen-controlled outposts is the game’s best way of nabbing ethanol for upgrades. Once a player secures an outpost, they can use it as a remote base of operations. They can use outposts as fast travel points, to upgrade equipment, and deploy vehicles. Players can also scavenge the base for more ethanol. Doing this allows the Highwaymen to retake and fortify the outpost. If you want to retake the fort, you’ll have a harder fight on your hands. However, there’s more ethanol to obtain. Conquering and reconquering outposts forms one of Far Cry New Dawn’s primary gameplay loops.

Aside from that, though, there are plenty of questions still to be answered about Far Cry New Dawn. Standing as one of the most anticipated games of 2019, the Ubisoft open world shooter has gained a lot of interest for its colorful take on the apocalypse. However, some fans of the series still might need to learn more about the game ahead of its imminent release.
