I've managed to get the SDK link going and if you search this forum you'll find some details in past posts. Web is better, but honestly the best way IMHO and certainly the FASTESTway to get the data into navisworks is plain old simple csv files.
I think it should be made available by Autodesk to present a similar solution instead of connecting to the database.
that is a solution, but the benefit with the ODBC or XE link is that these are live links. Why this is important is because construction schedules are changed, weekly, monthly, annually depending on who you are in the project hierarchy. Each time the schedule changes, and the navisworks model is updated, then there is a good chance that everything must be relinked from CAD object to schedule activity. This is at the minimum a half day process after debugging and can be a week long process for one person. You can see the benefit of a live link that will not risk disrupting the CAD object to schedule activity links.
Select all, and copy and paste to excel.
Sent from my iPhone.
save as a DOS type csv.
make sure that there are no empty cells on the last row, put an "x" in any blanks.
the xer import is a plugin uses the timeliner plugin of the navisworks.
relating to my previous post.

the *.XER file resides on the harddrive.
Is it a plugin something that you wrote ?. Can you share some information about the XER import plugin? Is it available for download ?
The XER file is a onetime export to the harddrive from the XE database in RAM.
I'd like to link Navisowrks with Primavera but I get error messages 1) "No Primavera Data Sources Found", then 2) "Failed to connect to specified DSN data source Invalid User”, and then a popup states the server is busy. Primavera with the Oracle XE database is installed and works, and the SDK add-on is installed and has worked in the past. A quick check of the services looked like everything was running that was necessary. Any ideas?
yes, periodically export and XER, and then all the navisowrks CAD object to schedule activity links break.
No not directly . I don't know if Navisworks can represent the schedule hierarchy. As a workaround I use a hierarchy encoded in the activity code - similar to a CSI numercial code. Also, the activity code is different from the task ID, I make a custom column in Primavera and add the code there. Maybe you can use the Primavera WBS code in a similar way, I have not tried, so there might be some nuance that messes it up.
this is the core distinction between the two that then leads to all the comments I made.
Did you have to write a plugin inside navisworks to import the XER file ? What is the process like ?
Wow these xer add-ins sound pretty cool but there is a simpler bootstrap way if you don't have them.
So, does this validate that we are the only two people in the past year that have tried to link Navisworks with Primavera and noticed that the link is broken?
Notice that it includes the WBS titles.
it is true that primavera connection to Navisworks has many problems.
It would be really nice if the XE link worked since updates to the schedule do not require a new import to Navisworks and relinking the entire 4D model.
you know with some effort all things can be done with ease.
Create a layout in P6 with a filter to select all the data you need to bring into Navis, including a Navisworks Task Type columns (user defined), start, finish columes etc.
I have never seen a construction project that never added an activity to the schedule sometime during the construction process - if you increment by +1, you will have to relink your entire schedule or every activity you add will not be displayed in order, they will all be lumped at the end of your schedule in Navisworks.
Does the script you wrote preserves the heirarcy in Navisworks?
So if my P6 program changes I simply open the layout, copy and paste into the ORIGINAL csv file, re-sync (or rebuilding if activities added or deleted) and job done.
so i 've made an XER import facility as a new data source that imports directly from the XER and manages also the hierarchy of the activities.
All that said, few projects that I know of use a paired schedule-4D simulation throughout the project, these are often upfront eye-candy for the contractor to show to the owner. And, in that case the schedule is a 'dummy' anyways with no scaling for differences in production rates, crew sizes, and scope of work; other words, how long it takes to do each thing.
For a solution I had to write a program that parsed the Primavera XER file as a text file and extracted activity, activity code, start, and finish, then wrote these to a csv format text file. Then I imported that to Navisworks as a csv file.
but if you maintain the location of your xer file, the schedule updater may work fine.
the XE database resides in RAM memory.
In excel add a column (last on the right) and put a number series in it, start at say 10,000 and add 1 to each row, label the column "Sort"
You can indent the WBS heads to roll sections up but you will lose this in you ever need to re-build (if you ever add more activities) normal re-synching is OK. You get a warning about duplicate ID's but this is just the WBS heading and doesn't affect the workiing tasks. DON"T turn this warning off (as can be done in Options) it will crash navisworks.
You misunderstand. The Sort column is only for re-sorting in Navis. In case you ever need to sort by description or date, having the sort column allows you to re-sort back to the WBS view. So it doesn't matter what the increment is or if it changes from one up-date to the next.
Once the data has been rebuild use custom columns to move the Display ID to the top of the list. When you sort by the Sort column all the WBS headings are there.
Any 4D simulation like navisowrks that does not include a live link with a scheduling application, is a toy and cannot be used on a real construction project that is using the current theories of construction engineering and management. It is just eyecandy over 1980's software that is probably for show to cover 1920's construction methods. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but that is what it is; see Boulder Dam construction.
you are write Navisworks doesn't support live connection with any scheduling software.
I have the same issue with Navisworks 2014. I could get the connection working. Help anybody?
I recommend you increment each row by +3 at the minimum - or you cannot add an actvity later.
When you link this file to Navisworks make sure to include the Activity ID as Deisplay ID and Sort column as a user defined column.
Navis Primavera P6 SDK ODBC XE Connection.
