A princess from a small Himalayan country becomes possessed by the spirit of a Venusian (a Martian in the American version) and escapes a plane just as it explodes. As this happens a meteorite falls from the sky containing Ghidorah, the monster responsible for her planet's destruction. At the same time, Godzilla and Rodan emerge from hibernation and not only attack Japan, but each other as well. Mothra, along with its twin priestesses, attempt to convince Godzilla and Rodan to stop their fighting each other and to team up to fight the new monster. At the same time, the princess is being hunted by a group of assassins who want to kill her so that her enemies can take over her homeland.
After a meteorite unleashes a three-headed beast upon Tokyo, Mothra tries to unite with Godzilla and Rodan to battle the extraterrestrial threat.
A meteorite from space lands in Japan. At about the same time Godzilla and Rodan also awaken to wreak some havoc. It soon transpires that the asteroid is Ghidrah, destroyer of planets, and a missing princess has had her body taken over by one of the last remaining Venusians. Eventually the humans must call on Mothra to convince Rodan and Godzilla to stop kicking rocks at each other and help save the planet. Same, same, but packs less of a punch. The main reason may be due to Ghidrah's origins. His three foes are all products of humanities mistakes regarding nuclear weaponry. Ghidrah is just a planet destroyer from space. You will enjoy this if you've seen the other films, and Godzilla and Rodan's quarreling is brilliantly comical. There's certainly more life in Godzilla's face than there has been before. Monster smack down time!
This movie, featuring Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah in his first motion picture ever, is a surprisingly good film considering it was about this time that Godzilla changed from a nuclear terror icon to a hero for children. He is portrayed more of a hero than a villain in this movie, but still keeps that same demonic air.

Although there isn't a huge amount of monster sequences throughout the film, "Ghidorah the Three-headed Monster" is a very entertaining movie. True, most of the action sequences are in the human part of the story, but they're very good considering the low budget. Dubbing is the usual bad, but not terrible as in some other movies.

And special effects are pretty good. Although I personally felt that Toho put most of their money on bringing King Ghidorah onto screen for his debut, because the best of the special effects are in him and his gravity lightning bolts. Godzilla's radioactive heat ray was pretty terrible except in the sequence where he fries a boat on the ocean. In that scene, it was a very attractive blue and well-created. But after that, it got reduced to a light almost yellow misty gas-like substance. Thankfully he didn't use this a whole lot, because it did look pretty bad on screen.
