After watching the brilliant and uplifting Australian Story about one man's campaign to help those in need in the bush, I was confronted by this inane tale of someone in some town in the United States who was involved in some sexual scandal. WHO WANTS TO KNOW ??!!! Why do we have to have some nasty little item imported from the USA? What has happened to the Four Corners reporting? Please Four Corners used to be a well respected current affairs program produced by intelligent and competent Australians.

I have just emailed the following note to 'Media Watch':

I watched the Four Corners documentary "A Hidden Life" last night (26 March) and was filled with despair.

The Four Corners website has as a subtitle 'Investigative TV Journalism at its best'. Well this piece certainly did not deserve that accolade. While acknowledging that this was an imported piece I am disappointed that Four Corners screened it under its banner.

It was certainly not what I would describe as 'investigative journalism' in fact it was in general a very shoddy piece of work and an extreme criticism of it might be that it was 'lynch mob' journalism at its very worst.

Particularly offensive was a group of journalists giggling with pleasure at having brought about the recall of the Spokane Mayor, Jim West. Later this was contrasted with a very sombre looking editor of the Spokesman feigning contrition about the downfall of Jim West.

The original newspaper investigation and the documentary was followed by a vigorous debate on journalistic ethics. Four Corners should have investigated this debate rather than its source.

Well done to 4 corners for story on second life. I am a mature age MBA student and mother of 5 who not only gets very concerned about the escapism of our youth into vitual worlds but the emergence of commerce to follow into the murky depths as well. I had heard about these worlds but had no idea how they operate or how advanced they are at crossing over into 'real world' market space.

I get to go to clubs n listen to house music, i get to parachute, i get to utilise my artistic skills and create: "build", i get to visit some of the most beautifully creative lands (such as Lauk's Nest: an early SL land with parts very much like the bush here in Australia), i get to indulge in retail therapy, i get to advertise my own work, i get to explore ideas, and i get to meet the world of mostly creative people who not only care what race i am, but are even interested!!

I have never indulged in virtual sex in SL (kissing and petting a couple of times but never sex). I am not in SL for sex or big business, i am there for escapism, to meet like minded people, and to have fun.
