I would recommend this game to anyone wanting a non stressful game to start into RPG. Its a simple and nice way to get started I,m an older guy and i love this game as i think you will if you give it a try come on folks have a go and enjoy.. Very good game. I'm really looking forward to playing the next one. Hope that the next one could have Chinese translation.. The first two games were definitely better and less grindy than the third one in the series...but nevertheless I couldnt stop playing this one either and had to get that sexy 100% achievements ;) Story was great in this game too, loved every second of it..good job devs cant wait for number 4 (hopefully). Cons:

  • Clicking on resource gathered or experience gained everytime is not acceptable - dialog should be buttonless non modal and slowly fading away.
  • Lots of grinding.
  • Final boss defeating was way too easy. Various resources and challenges had to be involved.

Pros:
  • Large map.
  • Fast shoping.

Still love this game. More challenges would be nice addition thou.. The first game was cute. The second game presented a better story. Both had you raising an army of workers, allies, and fighters to repair what's broken and fight what's evil. You were vital, but couldn't do everything yourself... which kept them from being just a world waiting for a hero.

This one? The story is cringy, and the pacing terrible. You'll go hours without a hint of the plot, and then a cutscene every room. You're the only moving part in the entire world. It just doesn't feel good.

And that's before the grind. In order to raise a skill, you need to grind at it to unlock more things to gather or craft. And you can't find enough to hit the next tier without waiting for resources to respawn, and trotting all over the entire map. Not *or*... *and*. You will need 80 mining to gather crystals. You will be stuck at 79 and be out of things to mine. I swear the devs must have meticulously calculated how many things you'd need and then cut a room off the map.

I can't say the previous entries in this series were ever *difficult*. You were exploring to find out that you need this grocery list to unlock that thing or do this other quest. And exploring to find free resources, and questing for better shop prices. This game, resourses respawn, which would make things easier if you didn't need several times what the entire map holds. I would say "to get all the achievements" but even after the ludicrous potion crafting grind, I was running out of health potions frequently at the end. (this is not a game of skill. you just need the right gear, including potions, to complete an obstacle.) Oh, and to make the grinding even more exciting, your tools break a lot. So you might have to sell off some things that you might wish you'd kept just so you can re-buy the tool to gather more stuff.. for the 12th time.

There are no improvements to the series here. Resource respawn is met with grind. Map now offers instant access to shops... but no longer lets you go to any screen. Crafting is... grind to make a shop in your camp, really. That's not *bad*, but the grinding is not fun. I take it back, there is one improvement. Food is abstracted a bit. You cook ingredients into a large quantity of "food" and you eat it in bulk to regain the hearts you spend on every action. And you eat more at a time later in the game. It's still pretty much 1:1 food-energy conversion, but you're not sitting quite as long for miniscule portions. But they also match the energy demands in the end game so you will burn through a few thousand over the course of the game.

TL;DR This game installed grind in a series about exploring, and shopping smart. And may have shot their writer in the head to prevent anything as nice as the 2nd in the series.

Go play the second game. Skip this one.. I was so extremely excited for this game to come out, despite there being less visible hype like with other games, i was talking non stop about how good these games are, they mix interactive story telling with the repetativeness of a real life and adventure, but its only JUST repetative enough to be understandable, it makes you feel like you're really working towards being stronger in your quest to become a hero, i love these games so much, they're so pretty, so well thought out and amazing!!!!!

just finished it, it isnt as good as HOTK 2, will try to max all stats to see if something special happens. I maxed all stats and not much more happened, this is not anywhere near as good as HOTK 2 its about the same as hotk1.

on thinking about this for a while, this game in comparison to the first and second, feels very rushed, almost soulless, the girl you save isnt interested in you. the side quests are only neccessary in order to get enough fame to talk to ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ people with ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ problems, only one person constantly calls you a hero at the end of the game, one guard you can click over and over, everyone else couldnt care less about you, the game is a grind and is cold and boring, not to mention feels smaller and more cramped than hero of the kingdom 2.

no hiring of mercenaries and builders
despite being plentiful of things to click on the game feels unfathomably sparse.
excruciatingly grindy combat that takes advantage of the respawning of monsters
feels like a cash grab on the fame of the first two games.. I've played Hero of the Kingdom 1, 2 and 3 now and I have to say, the first and second are a lot better. If not only because the pacing is a LOT less grindy. It was very confusing on how to level combat near the end of the game to 100 to kill the monsters required for the story, and obviously to get the skill achievements it's grindy but my main complaint was with the combat grinding. Either the endgame monsters needed for leveling it need to spawn MUCH faster (used cheat engine to no avail, using the speedhack cheat). I was advised that the spawning is linked to "progression" but that's it. And it's NOT progression, it's how many items are available in the game after a certain point on every map. So you have to keep harvesting and hoping for the monsters to respawn.

My point being here is I could sit down for 3 hours or so and complete 1 and 2 no problem. I would highly enjoy being able to do this with III, but it's impossible. I played it for a whole day straight (from ***roughly***10AM to 2AM, I don't remember but it was a super long time) and it went into another 4 hours or so of playing. Artificial grind =/= game length.

Also I think there may be a bug or two with quests showing at the end of the game, but I could be wrong, concerning the 12 animal teeth being traded for a "dragon's tooth" for the herbalism journal thingie.

All in all, 9/10 game. Music is great, story is fine.. Negative: It can be a slow slog getting through areas that have enemies, but it's not all that bothersome.

-Gaming Tourist. With my personal play style, I got one playthrough of the game finished in 14 hours. I loved the first two in this series, so had to give this one a go. I would recommend at least one playthrough of the game if you like to 'gather' and 'craft' things.

The beginning of the game is tough, as you need health, which requires food, but getting food requires health. There are things you need to fight to move forward, which require combat level, health, healing pots, etc. So I spent quite a bit of time finding a balance of moving back and forth through screens filling up my inventory to get those things stocked up, take on a chunk of the battlesto level up to kill x thing, and repeat.

As you do this, you proceed into the game and progress the story. The storyline was a bit cheesey to me, not as good as the first two. One thing I really liked in this game as well as the first two is the 'hidden items' like eggs and mushrooms and crates to be found. The crafting your own food, potions and weapons was nice too. It meant if you keep harvesting things, you never truly run out of x item you need for something. About halfway through, I figured out I didn't have to walk back to town, the map let you buy from any store, at any time, even in a cave, or you could teleport to the villages using the map to make it easier to move in the world.

The downside to this game is the heavy clicking, or a combination of clicking, using spacebar and waiting for animations to finish, like when you are cooking for example. That did affect the joy of playing. Every time you do anything it seems you have the extra clicks to get items, or because you gained a level, or broke the equipment. They could have made those vanish in a few seconds instead of requiring clicks for much smoother gameplay.

That being said, once you 'finish' the game, it isn't over, some of the villages have new requests for you to fill. Of course, with my hoarding instinct, I sold off a lot of my hoard to buy silver to max smithing, and now have to explore to find the items they want again. Figures, right?
