December 1 is World AIDS Day, which was founded in 1988 to encourage people around the world to unite in the fight against HIV and show support for people living with HIV.

Since the virus was first identified in 1984, more than 35 million people worldwide have died of AIDS.

A recent study conducted by IPSOS this fall in Canada revealed that sexually active young people, aged 18 to 29, believed that good hygiene would protect them from becoming infected with HIV.

Despite all that, celebrities have a strong impact on conveying a message, especially to the younger generation.

Check out some of the celebrities who gave their activism in December to support and raise awareness of this worldwide epidemic.

Elton John
The singer founded the Elton John AIDS Foundation in 1992 which supports charities and programs in 55 countries around the world and has raised more than $125 million.

He has also hosted numerous fundraisers throughout the year, including post-Grammys and post-Oscar parties which attracted many A-listers.

One of his fundraisers, The Vision Benefit in New York last November, raised $3.15 million (Rp. 45 billion) to support HIV/AIDS services across the United States and the Caribbean.

On World AIDS Day, he held another charity event in London, The Radical Eye EJAF to raise funds.

Prince Harry and Rihanna
His late mother, Princess Diana, supported AIDS sufferers in an era when it was not yet popular to do so. Princess Diana was once seen in a doto holding a patient in a hospital dying of the disease.

The image reassures the public that AIDS is not transmitted through casual contact and also helps fight the stigma of the disease.

During a royal tour of Barbados which at the time coincided with World AIDS Day, Prince Harry visited an HIV drop-in center for an in-person HIV blood test.

He wanted to show how easy and important the test is and how antiretroviral drugs can help fight the virus.

Pop singer Rihanna was also in her home country of Barbados at the same time as Prince Harry and joined him at the HIV drop-in center in Bridgetown, the nation's capital. He also agreed to get tested for HIV and immediately encouraged many people to take the test.

John Legend
The singer teamed up with Belvedere Vodka for the #MAKETHEDIFFERENCE campaign.

The liquor brand created a limited edition bottle where 50 percent of the profits will go to the Global Fund to fight HIV/AIDS in Africa.

Victoria Beckham
The fashion designer and former member of the Spice Girl believes that we are never too young to teach the benefits of charity.

Over the past few years, Victoria has designed a T-shirt to commemorate World AIDS Day, and this year she asked her daughter Harper for help.

The five-year-old created an illustration that was displayed on a t-shirt and sold on the website victoriabeckham.com.
