How much does a normal dog eat per day?

There is no one fit answer to this question. There are numerous concerns that matter when a dog’s diet is looked upon. Each dog has its own unique dietary needs. It’s hard for humans to comprehend or figure it all out about what their dogs crave. Even though pets like to make us think that they’re always hungry, that doesn’t help. (It’s hard to ignore those faces, agreed).

So you might read a lot about the diet for your pet but getting your dogs on a proper feeding schedule is crucial to their health. How will you really know if you’re giving them too little food or too much? You might not see immediate changes or results or even evident differences, but they might miss out on proper healthy nutrition or get obese in long run and become inactive.

Feed your pets based on their weight.

To get a little closer to feeding your pets the right portions is to feed them according to their body weight. Naturally smaller dogs need less food than larger ones. But what exactly is the perfect amount?

Ensure you have an accurate handle on how much your dog weighs and whether their body size is considered small, medium, or large. Not having an understanding of how much your pet weighs could cause you to easily under or over feed your pet. Feed them the best dry dog food in the market and here’s how you can know how much.

Tiny Dogs under 10 Pounds

Breeds like Pomeranian, Havanese, and Yorkshire Terriers. As a rule of thumb, most toy breeds weigh around 10 pounds.

● They should eat ⅓ cup per day if they weigh less than 4 pounds
● They should eat ½ cup per day if they weigh more than 5 Pounds

Small Dogs of 10-20 pounds

It may seem confusing to differentiate between a toy breed and a small dog. The catch is that the small dogs look larger than the toy breed dogs and weigh around 20 Pounds. Breeds like Terriers, Dachshunds, Shih Tzus, and Pugs can all be considered small dogs.

● They should eat ¾ cup per day if they weigh 10 pounds
● They should eat 1 cup per day if they weigh 15 pounds
● They should eat 1 ⅔ per day if they weigh 20 pounds

Medium Dogs of 30-50 pounds

Medium Dogs are Australian Shepherds, Bull Terrier, and Collie. They eat a bit more food compared to small dogs.

● They should eat 1 ¾ cup per day if they weigh 30 pounds
● They should eat 2 1/4 cups per day if they weigh 40 pounds
● They should eat 2 ⅔ cups per day if they weigh 50 pounds

Large Dogs of 60-100+ pounds

Large dogs weigh up to ten times more than toy breeds, large pups require a lot of food each day. Like German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Rottweilers, and Bernese Mountain Dogs are all considered large breeds.

● They should eat 3 cups per day if they weigh 60 pounds
● They should eat 3 1/2 cups per day if they weigh 70 pounds
● They should eat 3 3/4 cups per day if they weigh 80 pounds
● They should eat 4 1/4 cups per day if they weigh 90 pounds
● They should eat 4 1/2 cups per day if they weigh 100 pounds

Add in an extra ⅓ cup for every pound if your dog weighs over 100 pounds.
