If you have an older garage (great for storing your lawnmower) but it is still not insulated properly, you may be wondering how to weatherproof your garage Door. There are many inexpensive steps you can take to properly protect your door, but if you plan to keep your old garage, I would suggest looking into a quality garage insulation kit. There are many different types of garage doors on the market today and some work better than others.
The most common method of protecting your door from the elements is by adding or removing, the weather stripping that surrounds your garage doorway.Weather stripping is designed to stop molding by sealing the edges of the doorway. If you'd like to make your garage weatherproof or warmer, you could also add or remove thin layers of weather stripping all along the sides and bottom of your door.
Another commonly used method of protecting your doors and garage is by adding the insert panels that extend out over the top of your doorway. This should be done before you install any other type of door stop molding. Then you should run a bead of silicone caulk along the panel edge before installation. This will create a waterproof layer that will stop moisture from seeping up into your garage. Be sure to use the same kind of caulk as you did when you finished your remodeling.
If your existing garage door is not insulated properly, you will need to add a good bit of polyurethane foam insulation. This is done by cutting pieces of polyurethane foam to fit inside the edges and corners of the paneling. The strips of polyurethane are bonded to the edges of each of the panels in your garage door warmer. If this sounds like a lot of work, it is. But a well-insulated garage door will save you money on your energy bills.

How to shield your garage from cold air is also important, especially if you live in a climate that has cold winters. One of the best ways to insulate your door is to add a layer of insulation between your door and the garage walls. This is done with weather stripping. A weather-stripping system consists of strips of weather-stripping installed horizontally around your exterior door. Installing weatherstripping will help your doorstop internal heat flow, keeping your garage much cooler during the winter.
Another great way to insulate your garage is to add a layer of foam or insulation to your garage doors. This can be accomplished with the use of a special spray or with foam inserts that are stuck into the edges of your door. Whether you choose to install weather stripping, foam inserts, or both, insulating your garage doors will help your family stay comfortable, even in extremely cold temperatures.
