Free evaluations may be available through state and federal early intervention programs in children ages 0-3. However, there are many factors that lead to loss of hearing and why it occurs in people. Hearing impairment in very young children is usually sensorineural. Likewise, hearing aids are assistive technology, but with a huge difference - hearing aids will not give you normal hearing, they will only help you hear better.
For more severe hearing impairment, typically in the severe to profound range, cochlear implants may be an option. Blockage of the ear canal is the most common cause of conductive hearing loss. Loudness and comprehension/understanding will be an issue for those with mixed hearing impairment.
You can send short and precise email messages to communicate. There are multiple reasons for hearing loss in adults. The appropriateness of the intervention and the willingness of the parent and child to work toward progress are both factors. The quietest sounds they can hear are anything over 95 dB.
