How to check download process in WSUS.
The help desk software for IT. Free.
Track users' IT needs, easily, and with only the features you need.
I have a WSUS install and I have over 7000 updates Approved. My question is how can I tell if they are being downloaded to the WSUS server.
I have the column added to show me the icon of the update being downloaded, but how can i tell if it is ACTUALLY downloading or just hanging?
There are some that have fully downloaded but I just want to know if there is like a place i can go to view the TOTAL % left for the downloads so I can start testing with my clients?
As you can see in the picture, it shows downloading but how can i verify that it IS downloading?
I don't know about the status of individual updates, but if you click on your server's name in the console on the left, there's a Download Status section. You can at least see the overall progress.
For what it's worth, under All Updates, I set the view to Unapproved and Needed. That way I only approve and download what we actually need. Currently my server only has 3434 updates approved.
As Yasaf said, use the WSUS admin console. There you can see which workstation has installed/downloaded patches and if the workstation is pending for reboot.
Use the client diagnostics tool.
Also - use WSUS admin console to check the station update status.

Click on the servername in the left side - it will tell you how much is left to download. See if this goes down over time.
Or you can check free space on your WSUSContent volume (or total space used if shared drive and contents change often outside of WSUS).
Thanks guys. Both answers worked.
New to WSUS and the damn columns are confusing. Like I still don't understand the Installed/Not Applicable % column. Like what % was installed to what % was Not applicable..lol.
Can also look at the softwaredistribution.log file on the WSUS server.
"C:\Program Files\Update Services\LogFiles\softwaredistribution.log"

Basically it is a compliant stat.
Installed/Not Applicable - It has already been installed or is not an update for this system.
Needed - It is not installed and is an update for this system.
Failed - It has attempted to install and failed for some reason.
No Status - The system hasn't reported status for this update yet.
Lets say there is 100 pc connected to the WSUS server. With lets say 1000 updates.
What would 78% mean in Installed/Not Applicable?
Don't know why but I can't find a clear answer for it. lol.
Should that column read 100% on my network if everything is working?
Or should does it mean I have too many updates and 78% of the updates are either installed or not applicable?
How do i tell which updates are in the other 32% so i can remove them?

The 32% are updates that are needed but not yet installed and/or have failed on installing. Why would you want to remove them?
Are you the kind of person that just likes to see 100% and don't care that the number was falsified?
Why not look at the needed and work on those- when you get the needed down to 0% the installed/Not Applicable will be closer to 100%
