Compared to both the early Mark XI of the 1940s and its later predecessors since the 1990s, the Mark XVIII shares similarities and differences with both. With the vintage models, the goal of utilitarian durability and legibility is evident in the steel case and contrasting black and white dial. But aside from the design inspiration, the vintage and modern pieces look almost completely different: the cases (while sharing a similar curve) are thicker and larger in the modern replica watch and have a contemporary finish; the modern dial features are all larger and more visible, and the timepiece is an ETA based automatic workhorse rather than the manually wound IWC Caliber 83 found in many vintages replicas watches developed by the brand.

However, more similarities can be found when comparing the Mark XVII with earlier pieces in the Mark series since its reissue in 1990. Throughout the life of the modern Mark series, the general shape of the case has remained the same, as have the dial functions. The only clear differences between the Mark XVII and its contemporary predecessors are the 40mm case (as opposed to the previous 36mm and 41mm models) and dial arrangement. These include the placement of the triangle at the 12 o'clock position slightly below the minute ring, the use of Arabic numerals around the dial, the sword-shaped hands, and the base date window on the 3 o'clock mark. . Many of these features have been seen to varying degrees in previous Mark models, but the Mark XVIII is the first to use this particular combination. The modern IWC Mark XVIII is certainly an interesting reissue of the historical line of the Mark series, as well as of the larger historic IWC Pilot's Watch collection. It's also a change of direction from the last piece in the Mark series, the Mark XVII (seen above), where the case was slightly larger, the dial more complex, and the entry-level price a little higher. All in all, it adds another element to the ever-expanding IWC Pilot's Watch collection, providing a solid model for both new consumers entering the world of IWC replica watches and for collectors looking for an everyday watch with a solid backstory.
