This is the first game I ever asked for a refund on. :(

When I saw it on sale, it immediately took me back to fond memories of playing this game on my friend's NES, back when we were kids. I happily bought it, and enjoyed the silly opening sequence. I loved the odd colors, the blocky graphics, and everything else about it that screams "it's the 80's!" I was really looking forward to replaying through this odd little game, and hopefully, finally, getting to the end of it! (Never finished it, back in the day.)

But there was that mouse cursor. And that's when everything went downhill.

I played for about half an hour, getting more and more frustrated. The cursor is super-sensitive. If you don't nudge it perfectly, it jumps off to to some edge of the screen. You have to click on the commands in the list, and having a cursor that misbehaves like that is an exercise in frustration. Normally if controls are funky I can get the hang of it after playing around with it for a few minutes, getting used to the control quirks. Not this game. After half an hour I couldn't take it anymore. I requested a refund, and got my $4.01 back.. Maniac Mansion is unlike almost any other adventure game (except for Zak McKracken). The reason is that the NPCs in the game are alive. They have their own goals (get food, get mail, check out suspicious events), they can catch you, you can die or lose important items. Actions have real consequences, and there's even choice and different endings. The trailer above is very adequate and demonstrates some of that.

The reason this game is so alive is the scripter David Fox, the same designer who did Zak McKracken and was heavily involved in the recently released Thimbleweed Park. Even though he's not the official game designer, he's the one who loves to make NPCs have their own virtual theater with daily routines, reactions to your actions, etc.

This is also the first game that introduced mouse based interface and cut-scenes (in 1988). Sadly, the later games of Ron Gilbert and LucasFilm Games ended up being way more static, lifeless and fake, with NPCs that don't move, and player actions that never punish you, but at least kept the exploration and meaningful puzzles we can find here.

The modern port of Maniac Mansion is very good. It supports mouse, multiple saves, and different graphical versions of the game. Of course, it's the fan made ScummVM, but it's great nevertheless.. So I grew up with the NES port. This is a VSCUMM port and it doesn't seem to have the indiviual character soundtracks that I remember. You will need to hit F5 to save, quit, load, or adjust the game options.

If you normally run with a high mouse dpi, you're really going to want to turn it down to play this game. Controls feel a little clunky to me, but I grew up playing this with an NES controller and I may not have turned my dpi down enough. I could be misrembering some of the puzzles, but there does seem to be some slight differences in the gameplay than the NES version I grew up with

Also, 100% verified, it is possible to have Syd put the hamster in the microwave and turn it on with this version. (I would never condone doing such a thing in reality). I suppose I am one of the lucky? few? that was able to do this with in my NES version back in the day, enough though the NES version censored quite a few other things....

Anyway, 8 year old me is thrilled to see this game again.. great classic game, only downside is cursor control.

EDIT: update for cursor control works great.. One of my favorite games ever. Discovered it on the old nes first and probably the first game that left me totally mesmerized by how different it was. If this game mean anything to you i recomend the excellent Thimbleweed Park by the two guys who made Maniac Mansion. Full of references to it.

I disgress. If you never played maniac mansion before, it is an old point and click adventure game by lucasgames back in the days. You select 3 kids out of a possible 7. Who you pick changes the game somewhat since they each have their own little abilities wich allows you to solve different puzzles.

This release include the old and also the improved version. Neither of wich feature voices. It's an old game. Barely any music . The nes version was better in that regard.. Let's get the negatives out of the way and state what this game is not.

- It is NOT the NES version. Don't expect the improved audio of that version.
- It is NOT a native app. SCUMMVM is driving this game.
- It is NOT a modern app. No modern coveniences or design sophistication.
- It is NOT a documented app. Wanna know how to play, save, or quit? Figure it out.
- It is NOT something we haven't seen on Steam before. MM is a fully playble easter egg in Day of the Tentacle.

Basically, they took the original and enhanced DOS versions and straight up dumped them out to market.

On the plus side...

- None of the weird visual stuff that we've seen in recent ports. I'm talking to you, Square-Enix. Maniac Mansion is every bit as goofy and delightfully blocky as you remember it.
- It's NOT the NES version, but that's a good thing too. No censorship at play here. Let the hamster fun begin.
- Apart from figuring out how to save, it doesn't actually need documentation. The play mechanics, which are basically an extension of text adventuring, are simple and easy to learn.
- It's funny. Don't expect a whole lot of complex writing, but it's great if you love cheesy B movies.
- It's short, but replayable thanks to multiple characters and endings. That alone makes it worth the $6.

Adventure games have gotten more complex since this game debuted. I won't lie to you. The genre been improved up immeasurably. Early Telltale games like Back to the Future and Sam & Max just about mastered the LucasArts formula in ways that Maniac Mansion could only dream.

Still... Maniac Mansion is a seminal work. You owe it to yourself to play it at least once in your life. It's dumb, goofy, silly, and cheesy in all the right ways. Besides, if you finally want to 'get" some of Thimbleweek Park's inside jokes then you have to play this game. TP is practically a love letter to old LucasArts games like this one.. 1st ever game I refunded

Missing music
Worse Graphics
Mouse jumps all over screen
Would've been better if they just ported the NES version
