NAIROBI, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- His long journey as a golfer started at the Kitale Golf Club in Western Kenya out of making "golf clubs" from pieces of wood cut from guava tree roots and laced with rubber bands for a handle.

Tuesday, Dennis Saikwa, 30, plies his trade at the Golf Park in Nairobi. Born in 1984 in a needy family Nike Vapormax Blue , Saikwa grew up at the Kitale Golf Club where his father worked as a casual labourer.

"My early childhood was that of a typical African boy, with dreams and ambitions, yet with a bleak future as I attended Kitale Township Primary School," Saikwa told Xinhua in an interview on Tuesday.

"Alongside my boyhood friends, I would watch golfers play from the range at the club where I developed an interest in the game Nike Vapormax Black ," Saikwa said.

"We would then later practice on our own using wooden clubs and I remember being a good hitter and would tee the ball over 100 meters with my improvised club."

As fate would have it in 2000, goodwill come calling when a white man saw their determination and filmed them as they went about their business.

"When our benefactor came back from the U.S., he arrived loaded with complete golf sets for us, and that became my turning point," Saikwa told Xinhua.

Saikwa was a beneficiary alongside other aspiring golfers among them David Waku Nike Vapormax Off White , Joseph Karanja and Kopan Timbe, a trio that has since then been playing golf at Royal Nairobi Golf Club, Golf Park and Nyali Golf Course in Mombasa respectively.

Karanja, Saikwa's older peer, would later play a pivotal role in teaching him the rules of the game Nike Vapormax White , after which he became a caddie for a number of members, while training at the same time.

Upon moving to Nairobi in 2007, Saikwa met Lsaac Mwantu, who was the captain of the Golf Park Club.

Mwantu, then playing off handicap two guided the budding Saikwab by giving him the much needed exposure by taking him for tournaments as a caddie.

"We visited many golf clubs around the country. However my big break came when professional golfer Jacob Okello Nike Vapormax 2018 , who finished second during the 1998 Kenya Open, offered me a chance to caddie for him for three years, thus giving me the much needed exposure," Saikwa said.

For a man who has developed from the humblest of beginnings the off-handicap plus one today labors prospects of playing at the Kenya Open as well as the Sunshine Tour in three years time.

The father of one daughter first won the caddies tournament in Kitale in 2003 before playing in other Goty events. He won last Year's Nyanza Open during his first Goty.

He has also played at Thika Open where he finished runners-up during the Winston Churchill tournament in 2012 besides participating twice in the Tanzania Open where earlier in 2011 he had finished 6th overall.

Saikwa, who has since taken to training children at the Golf Park course Nike Vapormax Flyknit , dispels the widely-held belief that golf is a game for the rich.

LONDON, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Britain will send 33 athletes across 14 disciplines at the second Youth Olympic Games to be held in Nanjing, China, the British Olympic Committee (BOC) announced here on Tuesday.

It will be "the most number of sports the country has ever competed at during an Olympic youth event," the BOC said in its official website.

The British delegation will be headed by Olympic rowing bronze medallist and BOA Athlete Commission Chair Sarah Winckless.

ROME， Oct.6 (Xinhua) -- The Food Price Index climbed 2.9 percent in September from August， mainly driven by a surge in dairy products prices， according to data released by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on Thursday.

Prices for grains and cereals， the largest component in the index， fell 1.9 percent， due to good rice harvests in Asia. But that was not enough to offset gains in other sectors.

The biggest increase came from dairy products， which saw prices jump 13.8 percent due to low milk output in Europe.

Sugar prices also went up， rising 6.7 percent because of bad weather in Brazil， the world's leading sugar producer.

Prices for fats and oils， meanwhile， rose by 2.9 percent， and meat prices were flat.

With the increase in September， the overall index is now 10 percent higher than it was a year ago.

The index has now climbed in seven of the last eight months， after nearly two years of steady declines.
