The 500-MWac Ibri II photovoltaic (PV) park in the northern governorate of Al Dhahirah, which cost OMR 155 million to build, was inaugurated today.



According to local media, Oman's interior minister, Sayyid Hamoud bin Faisal al Busaidi will launch the solar facility.



Under a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Oman Power and Water Procurement Company, the park's electricity is routed into the public grid (OPWPC).



At full capacity, the facility will generate enough electricity to power 33,000 households while also reducing carbon emissions by 340,000 tonnes each year. Ibri-II, located around 300 kilometers (186.4 miles) west of Muscat, is the Sultanate's second grid-connected renewable energy park, following the 50-MW Dhofar wind farm, which went online in 2019.



ACWA Power of Saudi Arabia owns 50% of the project, with the Gulf Investment Corporation owning 40% and the Alternative Energy Projects Co owning the remaining 10%.



The Ibri II project contributes to Oman's Vision 2040 and serves as a watershed moment for other renewable energy initiatives. According to OPWPC's chief executive Yaqoob Saif al Kiyumi, the company is currently working on two solar plants with a combined capacity of 1,000 MW in the Al Dakhiliyah governorate, as well as wind projects in the Ash Sharqiyah and Al Wusta governorates.
