When you run QuickBooks File Doctor to recover damaged files or resolve network issues, you may get this result. When QuickBooks Hosting is not on, you will not be able to access your data on the network; therefore hosting must be turned on.

Note- Workstation computer users can avoid this message.

Steps To Turn On Hosting Mode in QuickBooks
Turning the QuickBooks cloud hosting mode on means accessing data stored in computer in multi-user mode by the other computers.

To access the company file, users must have the following permissions-

Windows File Permission: The logged-in user must have all the permissions to view, open, and make changes in the file.
QuickBooks Server Mode: This is to open the company file
Database Server Mode: Each of the end-users must have the QuickBooks login credentials, that is user name and password.
Different QuickBooks Hosting Modes
Hosting mode in QuickBooks is set for every computer and every version of the QuickBooks, but not for the QB Installation or company file. If different versions of QuickBooks 2016 and later versions are being utilized in hosting mode, then each version will have their setting.

The main hosting modes in the QuickBooks are-

Not Hosting (Hosting Off)
Hosting Local Files
Hosting Local and Remote Files.
Hosting Off Mode :

In this mode, QuickBooks Database Manager runs normally in the form of Windows user running the program.
Multiple users can not access the company file, but a shared memory is used to communicate with the QuickBooks.
The only user, who can access the company file is the one running QuickBooks on the local computer.
Hosting Local Files Mode :

In this mode, QuickBooks Desktop manages to access the company file via a service known as QuickBooksDBXX. (Note- In QuickBooksDBXX, XX is the number that may range from 17-28 based on the version of the QuickBooks used. For instance- QuickBooks Desktop 2018 uses QuickBooksDB28, QuickBooks Desktop 2017 uses QuickBooksDB27 and QuickBooks Desktop 2016 uses QuickBooksDB26.
The Database Server Manager also runs in the form of Windows user QBDataServiceUserXX (where XX has the same value as above).
QuickBooksDBXX service is accessible until the computer is on.
TCP/IP is used to communicate with the QuickBooks and allow the multi-user file receives.
The Database server that allows remote users to access company files runs in “Hosting Local Files Only” mode.
The computer deployed in this mode can access only those files available on that computer.
QuickBooks Hosting In Local & Remote File Mode :

In this mode, QB Data Manager runs as Windows user that is logged in currently and ends as the user logs out.
A computer in this mode helps multi-user file access by using TCP/IP to communicate with the QuickBooks. Remote QuickBooks users can access files stored in this computer via a database server.
In this mode, a local computer can host files stored in it as well as files stored in the remote computer that are opened in this local computer.
How QuickBooks decides which database server needs to be communicated?
First and foremost, QuickBooks look for .nd file which a smaller file having the same name as company file. The file is stored in the same folder where .qbw is located. This folder also contains the information required to contact the server (IP address and Port).
Next, QB checks if .qbw file is in use or not.
Once, QB finds .nd file and company file is being used; it tries to communicate with the server.
If QB fails to communicate with the server, then it attempts to open the company file.
If QB still can’t communicate with the server, then an error message flashes with the steps to be taken to resolve the issue.
