Residential segregation remains a major issue within the United States. Many years, matters arising from race segregation are being debated by the public; however, it is evident from the everyday activities that the measures put to address the problem are still inadequate. Across the country, racial discrimination still defines the social environment, and the skin color still determines the different aspects of a public daily life, such as the employment and education opportunities, even though it is already the 21st century (Weatherspoon, 2014). Race determines the resources available to children as they grow, and, as a result, shapes the rest of their life. Racial segregation is a social issue that needs to be addressed continually, as it negatively affects the children, adults and, eventually, the communities in which they live.

Opportunities and resources available to any individual in the United States are determined by the color of their skin, and children from the white families face more opportunities as compared to their black counterparts. For instance, Reich (2014) reports that poverty levels among African-Americans are higher compared to those among the white citizens. Meanwhile, the differences between the Whites and Blacks arise from their social upbringing and their parents social status (Reich, 2014).
Due to the limited opportunities regarding education, children from black backgrounds have, also the time they spend with their parents and limited job opportunities in their future. Education is essential to the people of all races. Nonetheless, although both black and white students attend similar schools, the learning opportunities available to the two races vary. There is a widespread assumption that education inadequacy among black children is caused by their genes while, contrariwise, the cultural issues or deficient efforts are mistreated (Weatherspoon, 2014).
Over the years, the social environment in the United States has undergone different changes, however, racial segregation at the workplace remains evident in the society even today. Weatherspoon (2014) asserts that promotion opportunities are regularly being denied to the black people under a notion that they prefer low-level jobs; the same concerns the internship opportunities. For example, Reich (2014) reports that the African-Americans, who try to become the physicians, have limited chances to find the internship although different organizations have taken a duty of offering the scholarship and internship opportunities to the black students.
The lack of employment opportunities pushes the black people to work at two or three different jobs, as they strive to support their families. The situation is even harder for black single mothers, who have to take the low-paid jobs to provide for their families (Weatherspoon, 2014). As a result, many black parents spend very little time with their children and, having a very limited interaction with their parents, black children often fall into bad habits that lead them to the dangerous paths.
A different availability of the above-mentioned three resources, in turn, has the different influences on the social mobility of the individuals involved. For instance, a need to find the better education opportunities for their children pushes black parents to strive to change their current social position in society (Reich, 2014). A search for the better employment that would bring an improvement in time spent with their families, black people strive to move from one social class to another. Whereas, the inadequate employment opportunities for black people result in the poor living conditions, which, then, cause a downward social mobility.
In conclusion, it is essential to point out that even though racial segregation is still an issue of a great concern in the United States, there are many possibilities to bridge the gap. Social mobility and striving for better future offer opportunities to break the racial segregation. However, the truth is that issues arising from the racial segregation are still a challenge for many black individuals. Nevertheless, a race should not determine the opportunities afforded to any individual.
