Peptide drugs have a wide range of applications. The cancer peptide segment, which accounted for more than 20% of the market, is the most popular and dominant segment. Because of the increasing incidence of cancer around the world, this application market is expected to grow rapidly in the future.
The neuropeptides application segment, which is expected to grow at a rate of more than 9-10 percent through 2018, is the second important segment of peptide drugs, owing to an increasing number of neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease around the world. Researchers discovered two short peptides that, when injected daily for five weeks into mouse models with Alzheimer's disease, significantly improved the mice's memory. The treatment also helped to alleviate some of the disease's harmful physical changes in the brain.
Peptides are small polymers with 40 or fewer amino acids that are considered complex drugs, in part because some peptide products vary in the length and sequence of their component amino acids, and in part because the products frequently contain impurities that can be difficult to detect.
