According to one’s own experience, each person defines values and beliefs that determine his/her worldview and way of life. These values are personal for everyone. As far as I am concerned, I find love, fun, comfort, flexibility, and beauty to be the most relevant to my life’s purpose. Certainly, all of these values were influenced by surroundings and some events of my life. As I was brought up in the atmosphere of love, I understand that it is one of the most important phenomena, which rules lives of people. Love is not only a feeling of affection; it consists of other components, such as understanding, sympathy, support, and other positive feelings. You can love relatives, friends, work, hobbies, etc. It is an overwhelming feeling, which is why I want it to fill my life. At the moment, I also appreciate fun, comfort, and beauty in my life. I think that these things make my life more colorful and bright. Perhaps, I will change my opinion some day, but these values are important for me today. The last value that I consider significant is flexibility. This trait is useful not only in daily life, but in a leadership career as well. I suppose that being flexible while working with people is beneficial for work performance of my own and my team. What is also important about these values is that some of them (comfort and flexibility) influence my viewpoint on diversity. In my opinion, it is significant for team work to achieve a company’s goals while working in a friendly atmosphere trying to make diversity benefit a company’s performance.
A bright example of a leader who manages to connect diverse populations is Wynton Marsalis. He leads people with the help of music. He tries to make diversity beneficial, and it is seen from his words, “Trying to combine many different styles in a ‘world music’ type of m?lange, I only try to hear that they are the same”. In my opinion, the main thing that forces Wynton Marsalis to connect diverse people and helps him in doing it is his wish for a united society. The main problems that appear on the way of removing common barriers to diversity are limited perceptions, ethnocentrism, stereotypes, prejudice, prejudice plus power, and discrimination. I suppose that the main takeaway from the study of Wynton Marsalis is his struggle for democracy, “I have absolutely no idea what my generation did to enrich our democracy. We dropped the ball. We entered a period of complacency and closed our eyes to the public corruption of our democrac. One more phenomenon that can be applied to solving the problem of diversity is Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs. According to this hierarchy, there exist five levels of people’s needs, which are usually represented in the form of a pyramid. The first level of the pyramid (the most essential needs) is physiological needs, such as air, food, shelter, sleep and so on. The second level presupposes safety needs – security of body, resources, property, health, employment. Then social needs come. They are love, friendship, relationships. The fourth level is esteem needs – self-esteem, independence, achievement, status. The highest level of Maslow’s pyramid is self-actualization needs – morality, self-fulfillment, personal growth, lack of prejudice. In my opinion, Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs makes all people equal; it is evident that everyone needs air to live, and everyone seeks for love and support. However, people do not always tend to reach all the levels of existing needs. For example, someone always dreams to become a respected person, to get a high position in the company, and to reach all the life goals. However, another person can be satisfied with having friends and family and does not want to move further. I suppose that every leader should develop in his/her subordinates the desire to reach more than they have. In my opinion, it will make a person a greater leader, and will contribute to better work performance of the team.
