Role of Sketching as a tool in Design Process

Sketching in the context of a design process is not a goal in itself, but can be considered as a tool to make better designs. Sketching as a design tool has several useful effects as: ordering your thoughts, better understanding of difficult shapes, functioning as a communication tool, and providing an interactive way of developing shapes. Designers have always used sketching as an important tool in the design process.

Sketching is a great way to investigate ideas quickly. You can brainstorm several potential solutions to the current design problem by sketching for an hour or two. This phase of the design process is crucial. It is directly linked to our thought process and visualization, so it is easier to explore our thoughts, ideas and imagination on paper using sketching.

One can easily capture beautiful scenes, natural places, or whatever we admire in the physical world. If the same thing comes to our mind then how we can capture our ideas then the answer would be sketching. It is helpful at all times and is a type of ‘visual thinking’. We sketch at every stage of the design process, from preliminary ideas to fine-tuning and even building. For designers, sketching is an essential means of communication.

This article focuses on the importance and utility of sketching as a tool in the designing process. This is the first step towards solving any design problem.

Recently, the Fashion Designing students of Poddar International College had the chance of getting acquainted with the creative Batik art in the Batik workshop organized at Goner.

What is Design Process?

There are four main components to the design process:

Observation- observe and understand what the product is going to be.

Brainstorming- brainstorming also involves some more research. Designers should create many rough drafts and sketches that are all taken from the collected data that are conducted in the observation stage.

Prototype- once the brainstorming and observation phases have been completed, the next step is to create prototypes of the Designs.

Implementing- last, but certainly not least, is the implement stage. Designers tie up any loose ends and being producing the final Product.

Sketching is used in 2D and 3D Animation, Interior Design, Exterior Design,

Fashion Design, Product Design and Jewellery Design.

Fashion Runway 2023 – one of the greatest annual event, was organized by Poddar International College recently where the supermodels and models carried and appreciated the outfits designed by students of Fashion Designing on the ramp.

Enhancing Students’ Creativity

Students who receive design education are exposed to a wide range of concepts, including problem-solving, inquiry, thinking, researching, and gaining knowledge. Design education, specifically project-based learning in the fields of interior, exterior fashion, jewellery design etc. is a creative process that produces the novel. Design method and fiction are transferred to the student upon the establishment of common working areas coordinated under the supervision of a coordinator.

Every year, Croquis Designing Contest is an integral part of the annual event at Poddar International College where the Fashion Designing students demonstrate their sketching and designing skills.

We can study several design options in a fraction of the time it takes with other methods because sketching is so quick. It's a quick prototyping method. Drawing is the first step toward seeing, and design is fundamentally about seeing. It takes a certain kind of thinking to find the best design solutions — the ability to let go of assumptions and prepare for the unexpected. Sketching is therefore essential to the design process.2

The Fashion Designing students of Poddar International College participated at the ‘Urban ‘Haat’ Contest held recently where beautiful garments, accessories and home décor items, made by the students were kept for sale.

Conclusion

Using sketches as a journaling exercise, you can record and explore your interests. It can also be used to investigate different approaches you could take with a specific design. As it is difficult to manipulate any solution to a design problem directly on a computer. Working through ideas on paper before using a computer will save your time. Building sketches on a computer is possible, but it takes longer than sketching several ideas on paper. One can create multiple solutions to a design problem by preparing pre-sketches for any design after getting requirements from the client.

One of the top Designing Institute of Jaipur, Poddar International College offers the best B. Des. and M. Voc. courses in Fashion Designing.
