Scorsese Used iPhone to Shoot a Scene in The Wolf of Wall Street

Have you watched The Wolf of Wall Street? Isn’t the movie wonderfully inappropriate! All the scenes are brilliantly directed by Martin Scorsese and stunningly performed by Leonardo DiCaprio. But did you know, among many beautifully shot scenes, the film has an eye-popping scene which is shot by an iPhone? You are shocked, right! That’s true. Director Martin Scorsese confirmed that too himself. What is that shot, and how did it make its way to the actual film? Let’s find out in the article below.

About the movie

The Wolf of Wall Street is an American biographical dark comedy, directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Terence Winter. The movie is based on the memoir of the stockbroker and trader, Jordan Belfort. The film is from Belfort’s perspective. He started his career as a stockbroker in New York City and then started his firm, Stratton Oakmont. And the firm engaged with malpractices, which later led Belfort to his downfall.

The story is wonderfully directed by Martin Scorsese and produced by Leonardo DiCaprio. The latter also played the role of the protagonist. Other cast members were Matthew McConaughey, Jonah Hill, Donnie Azoff, Margot Robbie, Naomi Lapaglia, and Kyle Chandler.

Filming

The shooting of the movie began on 8th August 2012 in New York City. The shooting took place in many areas in and outside New York, like Harrison; Closter, New Jersey; Ardsley, and Sands Point. Scorsese’s longtime editor, Thelma Schoonmaker, suggested filming one scene digitally. Schoonmaker also wanted to shoot the whole film in 3D, but Scorsese kept it in 2D. However, after many pre-production decisions, they pulled the majority of the movie in film stock, and the film also contains around 400-500 VFX shots.

The iPhone shot

Among many memorable shots in the movie that were amazingly directed by Scorsese, there was a “fasten seatbelt” scene. That scene was captured using an iPhone. It was also admitted by the director Martin Scorsese himself during a panel at ICM Theater. He explains that the shot was captured by the effect supervisor Robert Legato on his iPhone during a flight. He showed the shot to the director as an example, but Scorsese was satisfied with the shot and said, it is a great shot, and they will use that in the movie. It is truly unbelievable how an iPhone video could be a part of a film with a budget of over $100 million.

Despite all the controversies and allegations, the movie got an incredible response from the audience and received positive reviews from critics. The Wolf of Wall Street was nominated for five Academy Awards, although it won none of them. Overall the film was fantastic.
