Should Students Be Given Extra Credit or Not?

The issue of whether to give extra credit is usually met with different answers from different professors. There are those college professors who feel that college students should work hard. Therefore, they should not be allowed a chance to make up for lost points via extra credit lessons.

On the other hand, some look at the teaching method differently and ensure that they always provide their students with an opportunity to earn some extra points. Contrary, there are those professors who use the system from time to time. All this shows that different teachers usually have different viewpoints when it comes to extra credit. An important aspect is the existence of help sites for people. You can easily order a presentation or essay, or you can use essay help. This will help you save time, develop your own skills and achieve your goals. We have created this post to try and bring out both the pros and cons of the extra credit study system. Pros and Cons of Extra Credit

Understand there are those students who will prefer to take extra credit to make up for a poor exam grade or a missed assignment. On the other hand, others see this as their opportunity to gain extra points and bring their resumes a notch higher. However, it is good to take a look at both the negative and positive aspects of extra credit to determine whether it is beneficial to students.

It gives students a chance at redemption for a failing exam grade- no one indeed wants a failing grade to appear on their result slips. Therefore, extra credit is a good thing as it gives any students who fail a chance to correct that.

It motivates students- extra credit motivates students to put in extra work to get extra points. This is good as it encourages them to put a lot more effort into their studies.

Helps students learn in more creative ways – most extra credit lessons involve students performing a variety of additional credit assignments differently from the traditional exam writing. Where practical tasks are included, students can learn a particular subject matter in a different manner.

It can sometimes promote laziness – where students know that they will get a future chance to compensate for a particular assignment, they can choose not to put in a lot of effort into the paper. Here, the extra credit would have encouraged laziness in the student.

It can promote inequality – where extra credit is given for a student’s non-academic accomplishment; it creates a grading imbalance between that student and the rest of the class. This is usually evident in instances where students are given extra points for participating in sports and other co-curricular activities. For example, a student getting extra points for winning a basketball match.

Like everything else in life, the extra credit system has both its negative and positive sides. This is evident from the fact that some teachers prefer it while some don’t. However, that being said, it is good to point out that all students love extra credit. Given them a chance to get extra credit, and they will surely go for it.
