Silhouette Cameo Machine: Why You Should Buy It?

If you are starting a new business, looking for a new craft machine, or want to add a heavy-duty tool to your crafting arsenal, the Silhouette Cameo machines range may be exactly what you are looking for. The die-cutting machines can cut various smart materials, making professional-looking DIY arts and crafts projects easy.

What is a Silhouette Cameo Machine?
For those unfamiliar with the machines, the Silhouette Cameo machine range of die-cutters makes it easy to cut out shapes, images, and text from card stock, foam, vinyl, and many more. You can use it to make beautiful posters, greeting cards, and custom T-shirts, just to name a few. Along with extra add-on tools, you can even use the Silhouette Cameo machine with the new versions like embossing, etch, and stipple. There are 3 Silhouette Cameo machines to select from:

The original Silhouette Cameo machine can cut smart material on a 12-inch by 12-inch mat. You can cut longer items if the material is on a continuous roll but is limited to a width of 12 inches. The Silhouette Cameo machine can cut smart material up to 0.08 mm thicker.

The Silhouette Portrait machine’s smaller follow-up is limited to a standard US letter size cutting mat that measures 8 1/2 by 11 inches. Other than the size of the machine, the only major difference between the Silhouette Cameo machine and the Silhouette Portrait machine is the product’s price.

The latest version, the Silhouette Curio machine, works on a cutting mat that measures 8 1/2 by 6 inches wide and has extra features of embossing and stippling. It has 2-carriages so that you can use 2-blades or tools on projects (but not at the same time.) It cut smart materials up to 2mm thicker.

If you are starting with this machine, the Silhouette Portrait machine provides a better price that won’t break your bank. Still, if you can afford the extra $20, the Silhouette Curio machine opens up extra options, as long as you don’t buy add-ons needed to get those features.

The Silhouette Cameo machine is probably the best for you if the large cutting area is important.

Silhouette Cameo Machine Tools
The Silhouette Cameo machine comes with a blade and 2-mats, but other things that can be purchased include the following:

Spatula: The spatula will make it easy to carefully scrape intricate patterns/designs from the cutting mat.

Hook: Hooks make it easy to weed out shapes still hanging over your cut-out design.

Sketch Pen or Pen Holder: There are 2 methods to sketch shapes using the Silhouette Cameo machine. The first one is to buy Silhouette’s sketch pens that fit the carriage where the blade goes on. Sketch pens cost about $12 for a package of 24.

Silhouette Pen Holder: It will be more affordable to buy the Silhouette Pen Holder, which costs up to $10, depending on where you buy it. Using a pen holder means you don’t have to worry about running out of ink and can use any suitable pen. If you are inclined, you can try to make your DIY Silhouette pen holder.

Engraving Tool: The tool is a bit expensive, costing around $30, but it will allow for engraving thinner metal like metal dog tags for stamping blanks.

Fabric Blade: Silhouette Cameo machines can be used to cut fabric, even for sewing projects. They sell a blue blade, especially for fabric, but the color is different between the blue blade and the black standard blade. It will ensure that you don’t use a fabric blade on paper or vice versa, but since the fabric blade is a bit more costly, just buy a regular blade and mark it so you can separate it from the paper blade.

Silhouette Cameo machine tries to outdo its starter kit and extra tools, but you can get a lot out of the machine without purchasing them. If anything, we recommend buying a spatula and hook, whether from the Silhouette Cameo machine or elsewhere.

How Does Silhouette Cameo Machine Work?
Whatever machine you have (or decide to buy) works almost the same way. Silhouette Studio software can make shapes, pictures, and phrases to cut out with the Cameo machine. You can import existing vectors made in Illustrator or downloaded from stock websites and convert them into cut files. Silhouette Studio software is available to buy shape and cut files.

Using Illustrator, you’ll find Silhouette Studio software extremely easy to use. There is a small learning curve if you have no experience with Illustrator, but once you get the hang features – it’s an easy-to-use program with great potential.

What Can You Create With a Silhouette Cameo Machine?
The Silhouette Cameo machine can cut various products like paper and card stock, adhesive vinyl, heat transfer materials, craft foam, vellum, etc. And the projects that come with it are endless.

In addition to clear paper crafts, if you find screen printing overwhelming, you can make custom T-shirts out of vinyl, mugs, water bottles, and anything else you can also stick to vinyl. If you have a small business, you can use the Silhouette Cameo machine to make tags, boxes, gift card holders, and other small skillets that add a great, personal touch. And if you don’t, Silhouette Cameo machines are a great way to make crafts that you can sell online. Also, you can use the Silhouette Cameo machine to make temporary tattoos or stencils. With a special starter kit, you can make a design for engraving on glass or use a unique stamping material to make custom rubber stamps.
