By the people behind the pretty great Cinders comes a new Visual Novel with beautiful graphics. You play 2 newly arrived people in a mysterious city that becomes isolated 3 months per year because of the harsh winter. I won't say more not to spoil anything for you except that it is refreshing to see beautiful and smart western novels that do not try to copy Asian VN (especially the graphics). Worth replaying as you won't discover every secret of the city in a single playthrough.. Great story, interesting choices, I loved it. His is hands down one of my favourite visual novels. The world building is amazing, the characters all have depth of both personality and personal history and their motivations generally make sense and are believable. The art work, which drew me in the most, is absolutely breathtaking, and the character designs are varied and beautiful. There's a nice mix of races which you don't always see and some variaton of body types, making it feel more real. The storyline is really compelling and it was an utter joy to go through multiple times to get all the endings and see the different dynamics you could invoke between characters. This piece has a real lasting effect on me as a story, honestly I wish it were a book I could buy too! Definitely recommend if you like beautiful art, realistic characters and a compelling story.. Interesting story, romances, beautiful art, nice music and many different endings. This game has pretty much everything a good visual novel needs. You play as two characters: Galen, the citys new doctor and Yani, an architect. Cut off from the world and unfamiliar with the people and their lives, it's your task to solve the mystery about a missing madman, that quickly resolves into something bigger and far more dangerous.. Lovely game, awesome art but way to long dialogues + mouse click spam. There are multiple ends but not enough & none of them which to save someone you want. Also, not really my kind of game at the start but i became more curious and had to finish it. It's a beautiful game but i think it would had more succes if there was action in it and actually can play the characters with more decisions. Because in 70% of the story you cant decide much what to do, dialogue is really predictable, is more like just read & click. Maybe the writters should check fanfic to avoid this kind of old gimmick cartoons dialogue. I wanted it to be more player oriented. Hope to see some dlc in future where can have other ends and get the story of C, fixes & if it will ever get on sale i want the CE and a amazing art with characters. If you like reading & investigation i recommend it but don't expect anything wow or fancy.. If you are a fan of MoaCube's previous game Cinders OR if you're a fan of VN games, this is an absolute must buy. Solstice is a beautifully constructed world riddled with deception, intrigue, and multiple perspectives that will keep you coming back for more each play through. I bought this game preior to the steam release and was hooked for a week solid. The artwork and music are breathtaking and fit the mood of the story beautifully. Fans of Cinders will notice that the artwork is even more refined this time around. Characters will move (crossing arms, tapping their fingers, etc.) and change their facial expressions through the course of dialog. The backgrounds were not neglected here either; every setting is animated and detailed. There is a story book like quality that seeps into all of the visuals. The music plays perfectly off of the setting and moods of the charactesr, bringing The Jewel of the North to life. The story is filled with betrayls and intrigues that require multiple play throughs to get a full picture of the city and those who chose to stay behind during true winter. You have a note taking system that catalogs major details you discover about each character. Depending on who was asked and what previous choices you make will lead to different discoveries. There are sometimes multiple ways to learn about a given character's secrets. Learning a secret from one person will lead to an entirely different note entry and perspective on the events. One play through a character may be cast in a sympathetic light for their wrong doings, but in another play through they could be shown as cowardly or deceptive. It gives a great depth on how the truth is just a matter of personal perspective. The characters of the story are just as deep and rich as the visuals/musical score. Each character has their own hidden agenda, motivations, and fears. The more you play, the more you realize that you cannot trust anyone at face value here and you're required to read between the lines. The use of dual characters to tell the story (Galen & Yani) also adds some depth as both characters may have the same goal but completely different outlooks on their situation. Both main characters have a potential romantic interest in the story as well. I have to say it was refreshing to see a gay male main character that the writers didn't feel the need to base his character purely around his sexual orientation. Galen is a sexually motivated character at times, but he is more than that as a character. Galen, Yani, and the full cast of Solstice come off as genuine individuals that will likely remind you of someone you've known. Very tough to get across that sort of reality in any writen medium. There are four main endings to Solstice with most of them having varients giving an epilog to the fates of all characters involved. Unlike many entries in the VN genre, there is no true "best" ending here. Even in the endings where you save the city, its a bittersweet victory that leaves the player wondering if the city should have been saved. It is easy to get sucked into the world of Solstice. Solstice is more than worth the price and its wonderful to see MoaCube delivering on another exceptional Western VN.. What a gorgeous game! Pros: Beautiful. Interesting plot. You get to play as two different characters who have mysterious backstories you have to discover. The main characters are really cool. One is an interesting female protagonist. Lots of choices. The story is a good length (maybe a little long). Cons: There were a lot of endings, but most were not happy endings. I felt like it was not very satisfying to go through the whole game and then have a lot of bad choices to choose from. It makes it much less re-playable for me personally.. This game presents itself as a game about treasure and mystery, but is really a somewhat unclimactic and underdeveloped whodunnit. Whodunnits can be fun, but the issue with this game is that it has you collect information about people as if you are going to use it to some purpose (which takes up a good portion of the game), but you never do and it makes it all feel like a waste of time. There's magic but it's almost like an afterthought, there's politics but you play as almost powerless characters who can't change anything except by killing everyone, there is the mysterious kala but it's written off as a meaningless aside. In addition, instead of allowing you to find clues and eliminate suspects, the game just outright tells you who didn't do it and narrows the list down to a select few for you. Who wants to be a detective with no real intrigue or important discoveries to be made and with a verdict practically handed down for you? Only about three of your choices really make an impact, since most just change the dialogue slightly. Also, none of the characters are redeemable and none of them are given time to grow or change which made the story seem stagnant. In short I would NOT reccomend buying this at full price, if you must try it, wait for a sale. It really needs more plot development.. Solstice is a good visual novel in classic style (no-manga), taking place in a fantasy world infused with magic and with steampunk flavor. The story follows two protagonists: a doctor-magician from southern lands with hedonistic approach to life, and a dutiful technician from an organization of tech-architects. These disparate characters have both the same mission though: to save a city on the frozen north from doom at the hands of an unknown saboteur and clutches of deadly winter. The game is fully illustrated in beautifully drawn sceneries with animated figures and has good music, and will last for several hours until you unlock all variants (coming in four different endings) by carefully choosing what to say or do in certain situations. The main problem I have with this game is its price; 18 for a game that is essentially a bunch of texts arranged in a decision tree and few pictures with only some basic animation is just too much in my opinion. But its well worth a try for fans of this genre when its offered at a discount.. The good: Visually gorgeous, mystery-oriented visual novel with an interestingly nonstandard structure (i.e. two protagonists). Plenty of character racial diversity, and a queer relationship. The bad: Pacing felt slow for much of the game (though it was JUST RIGHT at the end, which is. rare to see). Less replay value than I'd hoped for due to placement of key, ending-determining choices. If you played and enjoyed Cinders, you should absolutely play Solstice. If you like visual novels or other story-based games in general, you should probably play Solstice. Don't expect a dating sim, however, because this isn't one. Both main characters can become romantically involved with an NPC, but there is only one option for each of them. In general I enjoyed the themes and the characters, and I think that the dual-protagonist structure really added to things in that you get to choose how much those two protagonists do or don't cooperate with one another. The writing felt slow to me through much of the game, though, so those apt to get impatient reading through dialogue might have issues (I have a great deal of patience). That said, I think they nailed the pacing at the ending, which is, of course, very important. Aside from the pacing, the only major negative aspect of this game for me was the lack of replay value. Its endings are structured like the ones in Cinders - there are a few major endings and several variations on most of them. However, unlike in Cinders, the variables determining which of the major outcomes you get are largely NOT woven through the whole storyline, and that's a major weakness, as far as I'm concerned. What causes you to get one major outcome or another comes down to only a very few major choices, and as those choices are mostly concentrated near the very end of the game, I just reloaded one of my late saves to look at multiple endings and felt no real desire to replay the game in full. Given this, I'm really glad I got the game on sale. They did a fantastic job with the storyline, for the most part, if you ignore replay value, but I wouldn't have wanted to spend $20 on a game I wasn't going to play more than 3-4 hours total.
