In 1885 Edward Hyde, Murderous alter ego of Henry Jekyll disappears. Fifty years later orphaned young medic Robert Jekyll returns to London from Ceylon where his superhuman strength and outbursts when stressed have attracted attention, requiring medication from adoptive father, Dr Najaran. He is told by solicitor Max Utterson that he is descended from Dr Jekyll whilst back in Ceylon sinister Captain Dance from the organization Tenebrae kills the doctor and his wife in his search for Robert. Sir Roger Bulstrode, head of MIO, an anti-monster spy network is keen to recruit Robert but before he can do so Robert, hearing of his foster parents' death, undergoes a deadly transformation, being rescued by music hall owner Bella and elderly Mr Garson, who seems to recognize what he is.
The grandson of the infamous Dr Jekyll returns to 1930s London from Ceylon after he experiences a disturbing transformation. As he delves into his family history he begins to attract the attention of a secret society and a spy-master.
An exciting beginning. Beautifully detailed period setting which captures the grime of London, with the beginnings of a plot that subverts and extends the Jekyll and Hyde contemporary myth/metaphor.

As a first episode it focuses on character development and exposition, setting the events that have led from the classic Gothic tale to this later time; like all good first episodes it achieves this without clumsiness or prosaic narrative. A few carefully placed flashbacks bring us quickly into the story.

It's delightful to see Richard E Grant in a role well suited to his acting style. Other strong performances from a highly credible cast.

With its blend of action, whimsy, mystery, the supernatural and intrigue, and with the highly dependable Charlie Higson wielding the pen, backed by some first rate actors, things are looking good for Sunday evening viewing for the next ten weeks. Robert Jekyll has an adopted Indian family, he's helping hid dad with his clinic. On his first day a van crashes through the wall of the clinic, crushing a little girl, Robert has the strength to lift it, setting her free. Robert receives a legacy in London, he sets of leaving his family behind. Robert is given pills as he has an 'illness,' something inside him, he has a dark raging anger. Robert begins discovering information about his father Louie Hyde. Robert hears of the death of his family out in Ceylon, and his angry urges take over, he runs amok in the local pub.

I have to admit I was rather surprised by the transmission time, Sunday teatime, aren't we normally made to watch Last of the Summer wine??

Really liked the acting, Tom Bateman was brilliant, Richard E Grant, excellent as always, and Ruby Bentall fun as Hills.

The episode was a visual treat, excellent scenery, boosted by some excellent special effects, especially when we see him turn bad.

8/10 really rather looking forward to Part 2.
