When dryer vents are cleaned, the process clears out any particles or built up lint and debris that prevent the air from flowing properly through the duct work of the dryer. If left uncleaned, such particles and debris can be responsible for excess heat in the dryer, and this not only damages clothing, but can start a deadly fire, too.
If you’ve noticed any of the 5 warning signs below, it’s time to get your dryer vents cleaned, and fast:
If your clothes are taking twice, or even thrice times as long to dry, then a clogged dryer duct could be responsible. If you’ve begun to notice that after one normal cycle, the clothes aren’t quite dry, and you restart the cycle again, this is not only a waste of precious energy, but is also a fire hazard, and can significantly reduce the lifespan of your dryer.
A clogged dryer duct can mean that heat isn’t able to escape the dryer in the usual way, and when left untreated, can cause the heating element to wear out or overheat. Over time, this will damage the dryer, sometimes to the point where you have to buy a new one, and at the very least, result in costly repairs.
Lint is extremely flammable, and if you notice a burning smell when you run your dryer, the trapped lint could catch on fire. Any burning smells emanating from your dryer should be taken seriously, and you should stop using it until it has been professionally inspected and cleaned.
Dryer ducts sometimes have a flap that opens and closes on the exterior vent, and this isn’t opening while the dryer is running, then you most likely have a clog that needs to be removed. If your exterior vent doesn’t have a flap, then watch out for birds that may have made a nest in the warm space, or rodents, as this can also cause the vent to clog.
It’s recommended to have your dryer ducts cleaned at least every two years, and for frequently used dryers, an annual inspection and cleaning is advisable. If you’re not convinced it’s necessary, just look at some of the risks that can happen, if you don’t.
If you spot any of the above warning signs when using your dryer, schedule a professional inspection at the earliest. If you smell burning when using your dryer, turn it off and don’t use it under any circumstances, until it has been assessed and deemed safe to use.
