About This Content

A total of 842 “Black Five” locomotives were built for the London, Midland and Scottish and later British Railways; and, a truly definitive add-on is unleashed, in the form of Partner Programme developer Bossman Games’ fantastic LMS Stanier Class 5!

What became one of the more memorable locomotives in British rail history starts its story in the early 1930s, when William Stanier, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS), sought to design a new and suitably powerful mixed-traffic locomotive. In his early LMS days, Stanier used his engineering skills which he acquired while working for GWR, however steadily refining and honing his own unique style of locomotive.

When the LMS needed more powerful traction, Stanier’s response was equivalent to the GWR’s Hall Class, a 4-6-0 with a rating of 5 for passenger, and 5 for freight – the Stanier Class 5.

Originally the Class 5 fleet was known as “Black Stanier”, in contrast to the “Red Stanier” Jubilee Class; however, when ‘5’ was seen adorned on the cab side from 1940 onwards, a new “Black Five” name befell the fleet.

The do-anything attitude of the Black Five saw their popularity rise with both crews and enthusiasts alike – it could turn up almost anywhere, get the job done, and look good while doing it – the fleet of 842 was a familiar sight right up until the end of steam.

The Black Fives were sadly scrapped in droves, but an impressive 18 were saved for use on both preservation railways and mainline railtours, and the preserved fleet has a history of ‘acting’ by means of temporary alternative numbers to revive lost members of the class.

The Stanier Class 5 from Bossman Games arrives with no comparison and includes:
 • Circa-2018 representations of preserved 45407, 44871 & 45212, including 45407's appearance as 45157 “The Glasgow Highlander”
 • British Railways with Early & Late Emblem, Clean & Weathered
 • LMS 1930s Lined Black, Unlined Black both Clean & Weathered
 • Welded and rivetted tenders
 • MK1 Coaches in BR Maroon with BR1 bogies
 • Circa-2018 MK2A BFK Support Coach
With the ability to drive any example of the class, in both LMS and BR eras, plus preserved examples, a whole range of advanced features, incredible detail throughout, 10 Career scenarios and so much more, the Stanier Class 5 rightfully earns its place within the Pro Range!

One of the most advanced locos out there, weel worth the money and it even works on medium/poor computers fairly well, got around 25fps on the NWC scenario! Would highly recommend.. Well why did I wait so long to buy this awesome add-on?
Well mainly because I already had heaps of versions of the Black 5, many of them are excellent as well.
But I must say this one tops them all IMO.
It's a bit tricky to drive, but once you have the basics worked out, it is a real pleasure to drive.
The sounds are just great as is/are the smoke effects. Then there are the various settings for head light codes for either forward or revers running.. Well before starting with the praise we'll start off by recommending the reading of the manual as the new Black 5 is certainly not a simple pick up and go loco like the old Kuju model.

Now for the praise. BMG have done a fantastic job on making the eagerly awaited and improved Black 5 for TS. Nicely detailed inside and out and great sounds to go with it too it has easily earned it's Pro label. Several types are including British Rail, LMS and preserved also there are those with and without AWS fitted even the token system used on the West Highland line. Other rollingstock included are a set of Mk1 coaches, one Mk2 coach with BMG markings, maroon GUV vans, 16t mineral wagons and brake van.

As for the price it depends on if you're a fan of the Black 5 or not. I found it ok considering what you get and the selection of scenarios included which is neat. One item to note that is that the manual doesn't include headlamp formations or their meaning so I put together a basic guide showing the headcodes and their uses. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1414556013

In summary I highly recommend this to any Black 5 or British steam fan as this add-on is a worthy successor to the well worn Kuju model. A solid 10/10. THE most advanced, realistic and enjoyable engines to drive on train sim.. Ok, lets just say that this is the best train in TS (at the moment). The detail is increadible! ALL of the cab controls work, you get to refill the Sanders and Mechanical Lubricaters and OPEN THE SMOKE BOX!
The Sounds are also excelent and match up with the excelent steam effects. The loco numbers are fully editible and comes with a number of different pre-set locos including one with the blue headcodes for working in Scotland.
The coaches are very good and its fairly rare to get coaches on B1 bogies, although not the best avalible they are perfectly acceptable but dont have a passenger view in the MK1s. There is also a MK2 supports coach that does have a passenger view leaning out of the window. I will admit that the 16T Mineral wagons arn't very good and the brake van is one of the very old ones.
But in terms of the Loco it is the best you can get at the moment and is well worth the money. If you dont know about the locos then you will have to learn all the controls but apart from that it is truely excelent!
. This is an incredible rendition!
Absolutely the best steam engine ever made for TS.
After a couple of trips .. it will seems strange to play with others locomotives with the steady guages! The team did a really good job .. even though TS has pretty huge limitations, BSG managed to create a really good and realistic locomotive! (So we put a veil over the sterile comments released by the snotty kids who want to simulate accents :D ) It is not a locomotive for who use HUD. For an experience of 100% I suggest you to read the whole manual before using the locomotive! The only thing I would have done a bit different is the "reverse" ..it is a bit slow to screw back and forward! Great engine!. Wow WOW OMG this engine is a work horse to replace all work horses in train simulator BMG you have done so well this loco is more than worth the wait. Lots of stock, good looking fantastic sounding locomotive. No faults at:

Jacobite Warrior Has Returned

120/10 for effort BMG. Best loco in the entire game so far 10/10,...
