Utilizing and throwing that plastic straw

Utilizing and throwing that plastic straw is such a trivial thing, no? The amount time does it consider anyway? A few mere seconds? Chucking that thin little nothing in the can and forgetting supposed to be about it. But the irony is that, THAT trivial thing will certainly outlive you, me many generations to come. And this is something thinking about.

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle will not be the buzz words anymore that people used to use in your school speeches. They are a cure to the ecological disaster we all are sitting on right this moment. And even the littlest of eco-friendly alternatives to plastic have taken on a crucial role in our fight to guard ourselves.

With this actual thought process, two techies out of Trivandrum, Fariq Noushad and Previn Jacob Varghese own introduced a sustainable substitute for plastic straws – papaya leaf originate!
The duo has introduced an indigenous route to reuse papaya stem squander and make straws that are fitted with a shelf life of around six months.

“The stem from the papaya leaf, which usually visits waste, makes for a beautiful natural straw. So, we certainly have tied up with FORTY FIVE farmers from Trivandrum who grow papayas over a total area of 25 acres to procure the particular stems, ” Fariq tells More suitable India (TBI).
The notion of using papaya stems mushroomed if your two childhood friends have been brainstorming to enter that sustainable industry after working for around two and a half years in a software company in Southwest Africa.

“After doing each of our B. tech from Kerala University and working in the software industry, we studied the areas and realised that nature can be a potential field to harness. During our research, most people found a vendor cutting the stem and adding it in coconuts. All of us thought that though papaya will be widely grown across India, the stems haven't any value. Thus, the raw material is easy to get at and affordable, ” says Fariq.

The research resulted in the duo founding the organisation ‘Greenikk Sustainable Projects Pvt Ltd’ in Trivandrum’s Kochuveli industrial area to process the straws. At present the firm supplies 2, 500 sustainable straws every 4 weeks to a juice outlet inside the city at Rs 3 OR MORE per straw.
Testing, Breakdowns & More
The techies embarked on their journey this past year with no prior experience to generatte straws and very little knowledge about how the Indian markets job. From finding mentors who guide them in producing the straw durable to help conducting numerous experiments, Fariq along with Previn gave their coronary heart, soul and savings for this project. The testing process was done with a farm in Neyyantinkara.
Providing an insight, he pronounces, “We washed the stem in trouble to remove all the particular dust and kept this for drying in natural light. However, we realised the straws were shrinking and in addition they tasted bitter. So we added sodium and turmeric in boiled water reduce the taste. Regarding your shrinking problem, we knew they needed limited sunshine exposure. ”

The controlled drying led them to create a 3-step process. For exactly the same, they purchased two products, a water bath and oven from other savings and designed some sort of control drying machine automatically.

Things progressed as soon as being the machines came in. To test if their product had been worth selling, they even participated on the TATA Social Enterprise Difficult task at IIM Kolkata. Among entries from 500 innovators, their product was your second runner up.
Fariq and Previn own hired a team connected with around ten people to operate the machines and carry out the manufacturing process.

Following straws are purchased in the farmers, they are exposed to the warehouse where every stem is cut in to two halves and rinsed in clean water. They are dried and then soaked from a solution that removes proteins. The past step is packaging. The machines might make 4, 000 durable straws within a day which amounts that will almost a lakh per month. The profits are broken down equally between the duo in addition to farmers, thus providing farmers with an extra income.

One-time use plastic things like straws are extremely bad for the environment and they take hundreds of years to decompose. Previn and Fariq’s sustainable solution could assistance in eliminating the need for plastic straws to a large extent.
