SD-WAN does not depend on SDN technology, and uses a wide variety of technologies to convert the entire corporate network, including the WAN, into SD. In recent years, the term "SD-WAN" has appeared frequently in the media. This is an abbreviation for Software Defined-WAN. ITR defines SD-WAN as "a technology that enables dynamic on-demand control by software for corporate bases and networks connecting a wide variety of devices." SD-WAN does not refer to SDN or any other specific technology, but to a group of network solutions for solving the above-mentioned operational management issues of corporate networks.

Specifically, what kind of thing is called SD-WAN? ONUG (Open Networking User Group), a community of many major user companies aiming to open networks, summarizes the technical requirements for SD-WAN (Fig. 3).
