What is the Internet breakout realized by SD-WAN?

Internet breakout can be achieved by using SD-WAN. In the first place, breakout has the meaning of "getting out" or "escape". In other words, it is easy to imagine that Internet breakout is a function that allows a specific communication to access the Internet to go through (escape) a gateway different from other communication.

Internet breakouts can be broadly divided into "local breakouts" and "remote breakouts."

Local breakout
Local breakout is a function that allows the base to connect directly to the Internet without going through a proxy server. The purpose is to reduce the communication load from each base.

For example, by separating the communication that accesses cloud services such as SaaS from the communication path required for other business using SD-WAN, the resource load on the line and proxy server can be reduced.

In terms of terms, local breakout and internet breakout are used interchangeably.

Remote breakout
Remote breakout also reduces the load of internet connection from the base.

The difference from a local breakout is where the communication breaks out. In remote breakout, communication from offices and bases passes through the firewall of remote sites such as data centers. Then, by separating the connection to SaaS etc. by the router in the remote site, the load on the proxy server is reduced.

Although it puts a heavy load on the firewall at the remote site, it has the characteristic of being easier to manage communications than a local breakout.
