I'm a member of the Center for Philanthropy santafeb2c.org and my colleagues and I have figured out a few criteria that increase donations, and I'd love to share them with you:
Use the idea of image matching. Make a connection between the donation and the image of the person you are reaching out to. For example, start by saying, "Because you are a person who cares about people in need..."
Start by asking for a small favor. Before making a direct request for a monetary donation, ask people to share information about a charitable project with their friends or see if they would be willing to volunteer a couple of hours next weekend to organize a relief effort.
Use brain sync. Talk to people in person, give presentations, or use video messages
Use a sense of reciprocity. Give people something before you ask them for a donation. For example, give a presentation with a buffet, mail souvenir pens, provide access to special information. Make small gifts to make them feel indebted to you.
