Toro’s Pinocchio Casts Tilda Swinton, Casts Cate Blanchett and More

Guillermo del Toro, the Oscar-winning filmmaker, announced the cast of his upcoming project titled Pinocchio. The film will be launched with the releasing partner Netflix. Del Toro is an animation filmmaker, who directed DreamWorks features Kung Fu Panda 3 and Puss in Boots. Guillermo del toro Gomez is a Mexican director, actor, author, and also a special effects makeup artist. He has won the Oscars for Best Picture for the film The Shape of Water in 2017 and Best Director for the film Pan’s Labyrinth in 2006. He created many incredible movies like Cronos in 1993, The Devil’s Backbone in 2001, Hellboy in 2004, Blade II in 2002, Pacific Rim in 2013, The Book of Life in 2014, The Hobbit film series in 2012-2014, and many more.

Toro co-authored the novel with Chuck Hogan titled The Strain trilogy in 2009-2011, later the novel was adapted into a comic-book series. He created an animated series named Trollhunters with DreamWorks Animation in 2016-2018. Toro’s beautiful visualization and strong characterization connect any genre be it fairy tales or horror. He had a long time fascination with monsters, which he describes as great powers. His works are known for his use of religious imagery. Toro is obsessed with fairy tales. He describes the fairy tales as two facets. One is pro-institution, which is the reprehensible type of fairy tale. And the other one is entirely anarchic and anti-establishment.

Pinocchio is an upcoming American animated dark-fantasy musical film directed and co-written by Toro. The story is based on the 2002 edition of the 1883 Italian novel written by named The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi. The screenplay is written by del Toro, Patrick McHale, Gris Grimly, and Matthew Robbins. The film is produced by ShadowMachine and The Jim Henson Company and co-produced with Necropia Entertainment. The project was scheduled to be released in 2014, but the production took a lot of time, and hence it got delayed for so long. Now the film is finally rescheduled to be released on Netflix in 2021.

The plot of the movie is set during the rise of fascism in Mussolini’s Italy. Pinocchio is a love story and struggles to live up to his father’s expectations.

Guillermo del Toro announced that Pinocchio was his next project in 2008, and it is the darker adaptation of the Italian novel The Adventure of Pinocchio. He said that Pinocchio is his passion project, he also said that no other art had influenced him and his work more than animation. And also he has not personally connected with any other character rather than Pinocchio. Then in 2011 Mark Gustafson and Gris Grimly joined the team as co-director. The film will be produced under ShadowMachine has been declared in 2012. Patrick McHale announced that he is co-writing Pinocchio with del Toro on 23rd January 2017. In an interview with indieWire at 74th Venice International Film Festival, del Toro shared that they would require a budget of $35 million to make the film. However, on 22nd October 2018, it was announced that the film was revived with Netflix.

On 31st January 2020, the production team announced its voice-over cast. The cast involves Christopher Waltz, Ron Perlman, Ewan McGregor, Tilda Swinton, David Bradley, Tom Waits, Daniel Radcliffe, and Christopher Walken. Recently, in August 2020 some more cast joined in the team including Time Blake Nelson, Cate Blanchett, Gregory Mann, Finn Wolfhard, John Turturro, and Burn Gorman.

Toro shared that he found the perfect partner for pursuing his dream project at Netflix. He added that he and his team had spent a lot of time curating a remarkable crew and cast and is blessed for the continuous support for Netflix. And he also believed that Netflix would be the perfect medium to share his classic story in a new way.

The principal photography started last autumn in Poland at ShadowMachine’s studio. And the production is uninterrupted during the pandemic COVID-19. Del Toro and Patrick McHale are co-writing the script together. The music is by the Oscar winner Alexandre Desplat, and Katz and del Toro write the song lyrics. Saunders and Mackinnon build the puppets for the film. Pinocchio is produced by Jim Henson Company’s Lisa Henson, del Toro, Corey Campodonico, and ShadowMachine’s Alex Bulkley. The project is co-produced by Blanca Lista of the Jim Henson Company and Gris Grimly.

Del Toro’s Pinocchio will be closer to the book. The character would be as real as they are in the book. However, Toro is setting the whole plot in the 1930s during the Italian fascist regime. He is known for making innovative and dark movies. So this time Pinnochio will be an official spin.
