Top 4 car categories and the best cars to buy in India this year

In the year 2019-20, India recorded a sale of over 27.73 million passenger cars making it the 4th largest car market in the world. Traditionally, cars have been classified based on certain parameters like their length, engine capacity, passenger carrying capacity, and price. While there are other parameters too, but these are among the most prominent ones. Let us look at some of the best cars to buy in India basis these parameters.

Entry-level: This is the starting segment. Traditionally the most price-sensitive of them all, customers in this category are usually the first time buyers. While they may be a bit conscious of their budgets, these customers are the most aspirational of the entire lot. Cars like the Renault KWID dominate this category. With a value for money price starting at Rs. 2.99 Lacs (ex. Showroom Delhi), the KWID has been amongst the fastest-selling car in India. With its aggressive SUV like look and features that are generally not seen in an entry-level car, the KWID has changed the traditional definition of an entry-level car.

Hatchback: Commanding the highest volume-share of them all, the hatchback has been one of the most happening segments in India for the past few years. With a starting price of Rs. 5.19 Lacs (ex. Showroom Delhi), hatchbacks like Swift have dominated the car industry for many years now.

SUV: In the last couple of years, hatchbacks have experienced some serious competition from SUVs. Cars like Renault DUSTER have made a huge dent in the traditional bastion of hatchbacks. The Renault DUSTER not only offers a smoother ride over off-road or urban city roads, but it is one of the most comfortable and safe cars for passengers too. With a price tag that starts at just Rs. 8.59 Lacs (ex. Showroom Delhi), the Renault DUSTER has been a pioneer in this category.

7-seaters: The concept of a joint family is still alive and practiced in India where more than two generations live together under the same roof. It is for such large families that a 7-seater comes in handy. Or even for smaller nuclear families who want to carry their world around, the 7-seater is an ideal car. The unique modular seating arrangement of the Renault TRIBER makes it an ideal car for passengers who value space. In a category that was traditionally known for its long cars, the Renault TRIBER created a disruption with its sub 4-metre length. The disruption was further made stronger with a starting price of just Rs. 5.12 Lacs (ex. Showroom Delhi). Today, TRIBER is finding a strong calling among joint families as well as nuclear families in India.

According to auto experts, SUV as a category is most likely to make a severe dent in the market share of hatchbacks and may even end up becoming the most dominant category of cars in India. With some of the best cars to buy in India emerging in this category in the recent past and also with a very strong list of upcoming brands, this observation of experts may even come true much sooner than later.
