Lovingly referred to as the “wiener dog,” Dachshunds always bring a smile to your face. These unique pups were initially bred in Germany to hunt small games, which tends to make them avid diggers and barkers. Dachshunds have quite big personalities for their size and are known to be quite courageous. This bravery sometimes presents itself as aggression towards larger dogs or strangers; however, they are gentle and loving companions.

These family dogs do well in any type of family and can be loyal companions to one person or playmates to children of all ages. Fairly quickly trained, puppies live well in apartments and small homes and enjoy romping in yards and on walks. Generally outgoing, these funny pups are both up for an adventure and happy to snuggle in quietly at home.

There are three varieties of the Dachshund; smooth, wire, and long-coated, which can be in red, black, white, grey, or chocolate. Some have dappled coats that are black, and tan spotted. All three varieties of coats can be found in standard and miniature sizes.

According to the AKC, miniature Dachshunds are not considered to be a separate classification of the breed, yet they tend to vary in weight from the standard varies considerably. Miniatures weigh less than 11pounds, while standards can weigh up to16 to 32 pounds. All three breed varieties are built with long backs and short, muscular legs, which gives them their distinctive “sausage” dog look. With their long muzzles and long floppy ears, Dachshunds capture the hearts of everyone they meet.

Health concerns with Dachshunds are few; however, they can be prone to disk problems due to their long backs’ structure. Keeping these pups safe from injury is a top priority, and rough horseplay should be kept in check. Feeding your Dachshund puppy a proper healthy diet will also help them maintain a healthy weight that will decrease their chances of back problems.
