Replacing garage door springs, also known as torsion springs, can be difficult and sometimes dangerous work. The springs can be found mounted on a length of steel that covers the garage door's width, and placing the springs in them can cause
some problems, as they have to be wound very tightly before they are safe to
use. Torsion springs apply torque to the torsion bar that connects to the
wiring drums, which applies force to the cables attached to the door. As the
door is being opened, the thread wraps around the wiring drum, and the spring
force supplies most of the energy that lifts the door. If you are a keen Dyer

Step 1 - Getting Ready

Before replacing the garage door springs, you must lock the garage door in the "down" position using the locking pliers or by closing the door on the ground. It is to make sure the door does not start to lift when you remove or
attach the springs, as you can seriously injure yourself if this occurs. The
door closed, unplug the garage door opener.

Step 2 - Remove the old spring.

Please put on your safety glasses and make sure your ladder is secure or has someone holding it firmly.  Push the bar, so it is fully inserted, and then press the bar towards the ceiling while winding the spring.
Hold your cone snapped with the winding bar, and then use another to remove the
screws from the cone. Gradually unscrew both screws until you can move the
spring. Using both winding bars, slowly unwind the spring using quarter-turn
intervals. Once done, remove the old garage door spring from the backing plate,
and then remove the latches that hold the springs to the center of the door.
Make sure all screws are loose. Place your ladder under the red cable drum, and
then remove the screws.

Step 3: replacing the cables and drums

Position of torsion spring and cable drum. Insert new garage door spring and replace cable drums, red drum to red spring (left side), and black drum to black spring (right side). Tighten the screws, so they don't move while you put the tube
back in place. Squeeze the red cable drum and lock it in place. Repeat with the
other drum.

Step 4: tightening the new spring

With all of this in place, use your winding bars to tighten the bolts around the spring. Use alternate turns of each winding bar until you have achieved about seven and a half-full turns of the spring. Once you have do this, lock both screws.
Remove the locking pliers or unlock the garage door and lift it. If it moves on
its own, you will need to relieve the spring a quarter turn to ensure adequate
tension.
