Labor Day – An important day to celebrate the dedication and contribution of labors

Labor Day is celebrated in the United States on the first Monday in September every year. It is a declared national holiday since 1894 and marks the commemoration of the endeavor of the laborers of the country. The citizens also rejoice the day and the preceding weekend in the form of various events.

History of Labor Day

The birth of this occasion can be dated back to the Industrial Revolution when the laborers had to work extremely hard in return for a very meager living. Also, the conditions they were exposed to were too hostile to sustain. The workers, including children, were forced to work for almost twelve hours a day throughout the week, without recess, adequate sanitation, or ventilation. Owing to the extremities, the laborers began protesting against their work time and urged for increasing their wages.

The conditions escalated when around ten thousand laborers went on a march from the City Hall to 42nd Street in New York, leaving their tasks on 5 September 1882. Although it was a Tuesday, the notion of a holiday for the workers on the first Monday of September started getting popular among the workers.

The workers carried out many riots and strikes during this time, after which Congress passed an act to legalize Labor Day. Finally, on 28 June 1894, then President Grover Cleveland declared a law concluding the recognition of Labor Day.
