The theme for 2021 is "Better-than-Before Recovery."

The International Day of Peace is observed every year on September 21. This day was created by the United Nations General Assembly to promote peace principles among all countries and peoples, at both the national and international levels.

The COVID-19 epidemic has highlighted the necessity of working together to assist everyone rebuild and create a more fair, equitable, inclusive, and sustainable society.

Initially, the pandemic focused on the poor and weak. Despite the fact that over 687 million COVID-19 vaccines had been distributed worldwide by April 2021, more than 100 countries have yet to get a single dose.

Individuals who have been impacted by conflict are more susceptible to a shortage of health-care services.

On March 23, 2020, the United Nations Secretary-General urged that all armed parties halt hostilities throughout the world so that mankind can cope with the coronavirus outbreak. The conflict's folly, according to the UN Secretary-General, has become even more apparent in light of the fast spreading virus. In a unanimous resolution, the Security Council urged member countries to maintain a "sustained humanitarian pause" in local disputes. The international cease-fire must be maintained in order for individuals caught up in the fighting to get life-saving vaccines and treatment.

The epidemic is accompanied by an increase in stigma, prejudice, and animosity, all of which are fatal. As a result of the sickness, everyone has fallen ill. It makes no difference where we originate from or what religion we practice. We must remember that we are not enemies when confronted with humanity's common opponent. To recuperate from the pandemic's effects, we must make peace with one another.

We must also reconcile ourselves with the natural world. Climate change is not going away, despite travel restrictions and a reduction in economic activity. We require a green and resilient global economy that generates employment, decreases emissions, and increases climate change resilience.

The theme of the 2021 International Day of Peace will be "Better-than-before recovery for a fair and sustainable society." Participate in UN efforts to make the world more equitable and sustainable.

The United Nations calls on all governments and peoples to commemorate the end of hostilities by fostering peace education and public understanding of peace problems on International Day of Peace.
