Old furniture does not have to go to trash. You can work on the furniture and make it look new again. Here are the ways on how to remove rust and refinish metal furniture.Removing RustRust is very common on metals. Although most metal furniture are equipped with coating that make them rust proof, accidental scratches on the furniture can damage these rust protection layers. Nevertheless, rusts on furniture are easy to remove and there are many methods that are available. First, you can use a sandpaper to reveal the metal beneath the rust. A one-hundred-eighty-grit aluminium-oxide sandpaper is the ideal tool for this. Make sure that you wear eye protection and mask to avoid sniffing the rust particles. Second, you can use a stiff brush to get the rust off of the metal.

Third, you can also use a grinder. Grinding is the fastest way to get rid of rust. When rusts are removed, apply acid etch solution directly to the metal and rinse off with water. An alternative is to scrub the metal using a non-abrasive pad. Dip it in kerosene, scrub the metal and rinse with water.Refinishing: PrimerOnce the metal furniture shines again, avoid touching the metals with living room sofa sets bare hands. Use gloves to avoid oil from getting into the metals as this could cause rust build-up.Prepare to apply a metal primer. The best choice is the primer in spray cans that are available in hardware stores. Nevertheless, a brush on primer would also be a good choice. Cover the walls, floor and other things you do not want to spray primer to with old newspaper.

Even grass (if you are working outside) should be covered when applying primer and paint. Make sure that you are in a well-ventilated area when applying primer. This is also advisable when painting metal furniture. Spray evenly and thinly. It is much better to have several thin coatings than a thick primer coating at one shot. Dirt and dust may get into the metal furniture while primer is not yet dry. A solution is to let the primer dry and use a sandpaper to remove the dust particles before spraying another coating.Refinishing: PaintLook for enamel or lacquer that is best for painting metals. It is recommended to choose a paint that can stand the weather especially for outdoor metal furniture.

You can use brush or spray cans. Whatever you choose, make sure to apply as thin as possible as well. Apply a third coating if necessary. More coatings are necessary if you are changing the colour. It is good to have a paint brush ready even if you are working with a spray on paint since there may be sides or corners that will need a brush painting. It is not difficult to remove the rust off and refinish old metal furniture. All you need are sandpaper, a stiff brush or a grinder to remove rust. You will then need a brush or spray on primer. Lastly, choose a paint that is designed for painting metals. Again, you can choose between brush and spray cans.
