Why Everyone Should Have At Least One Hobby or Pastime

Hobbies and pastimes may be viewed as luxuries that only retired folks or people without work and family commitments have the time to engage in, but research has shown that finding the time and energy for at least one hobby or pastime, can have a wealth of benefits.

If you’re tempted to spend what little free time you do have, simply unwinding in front of the TV or sitting down with a good book, you could be missing out on some of the significant positives that come from participating in a hobby such as gardening or painting, or a pastime like going to the gym or getting together with your friends to throw an axe at a target!

Hobbies and pastimes are known to be great stress relievers, and along with this one worthwhile benefit, here are a few others:

Hobby and pastime benefits:

If you’re taking part in a hobby or pastime that requires an element of physical activity, such as hiking or axe throwing (and in case you didn’t already know, yes, this really is a thing, and it’s pretty cool!), then you can inadvertently help to:

- Lower your blood pressure

- Increase heart and brain function

- Lose weight

- Build muscle

- Strengthen your bones

- Increase your energy levels

Even if you’re only partaking of an activity once or twice a week, you’d be surprised just how beneficial this can be to your physical health, and an activity such as axe throwing can be a great work out for the arms and upper body.

All manner of hobbies and pastimes can help us improve upon our mental wellbeing, too, such as in some of the following ways:

- Lowering your stress levels by giving you a chance to relax

- Giving you a sense of control over your life

- Raising your self-esteem

If your hobby or pastime brings you into contact with other like-minded individuals, or just other people in general, then you can use them to help you make new relationships or strengthen existing ones.

Creative hobbies and pastimes, such as painting and crafting, can help give those stuck in mundane or very serious roles - or anyone with a high stress lifestyle – an opportunity to unleash their creative side and have some fun while being accountable to nobody but themselves.

Some folks choose a hobby or pastime that enables them to work on a certain set of skills they may feel they lack, such as communicating with others or physical endurance. Learning a new language or taking a course in public speaking can help give you a confidence boost, while finding a physical pastime such as running or axe throwing, can help you feel more energetic and less likely to collapse while running for a bus!

All in all, having a hobby or pastime can be a great way to unwind, meet new people, learn new skills and even get fitter, both mentally and physically. If you haven’t found one yet, why not begin your search today?
