How Can You Train to Be a School Security Guard?

With a variety of tasks involved, the role of a school security guard can be a tough and busy one, and while the specific job requirements will vary from state to state, and from one school district to another, there are a number of basic requirements and training procedures that remain the same wherever you happen to be based:

What are some of the basic requirements of a school security guard?

You will firstly need to have graduated from high school and be a U.S. citizen who is at least the age of 18. Due to the nature of the role, security guards will also need to be in pretty good shape.

Before you take any classes to begin training as a school security guard, you’ll need to have a background security check carried out, a credit check, fingerprinting and a drug test as standard. Note that good references are also required.

In terms of the required characteristics of a school security guard, those who can remain calm and keep a cool head under often intense pressure, will invariably perform better in the role.

What training will you be required to undertake?

Once you’ve conformed to the initial requirements (as mentioned above), you’ll be required to carry out some formal security guard training; failure to do so will simply mean that you’re unable to pass the necessary requirements mandated by your particular state.

As the majority of schools don’t employ armed guards, you won’t be required to undertake any classes related to the use of firearms.

After completing the mandatory introductory course to be a security guard, which takes just 8 hours, you can go on to apply for the security guard position of your choice. Once you’ve been hired and begun work, you’ll have to complete a further 16 hours of courses, and these must be undertaken within the first 30 days of your employment.

What experience should you have?

Depending on where you’re seeking employment as a school security guard, you may be required to have some prior experience in the security industry, and you may also need to demonstrate (or provide some proof) that you are able to work well with students.

Will you be required to carry out any additional courses or training?

Once you’ve become a fully certified school security guard, it may be that you need to undertake extra courses according to the particular school district, and might have to complete more training with every passing year. It’s also possible that as a security guard, you may need to be registered with the state, and might need to have a basic understanding of first-aid.

There are a multitude of venues in which you can complete your initial 8 hours of training – whether online or in person - but it’s important that you check whether the course will be accepted in your state, before you carry it out.

With schools ramping up their security presence in recent years, it could prove to be a fruitful line of work within the security guard industry.
