A riddle is a puzzle to be solved, formulated as a statement or question. We are very accustomed to them and have encountered them throughout our lives. But where did all these little literary gems begin? what was the first riddle that started it all? Riddles are not only important for entertainment and educational purposes, they are also an important part of our culture and reveal some information about our language and development. Riddles are commonly used in literature to convey a moral or test a protagonist, but they can also be used to solve questions in the real world. The oldest and first riddles can be found in literature, because only in this way can their origin and time be established. Delving into this deep story of mystery tells a story.Looking at riddles in our time like You go at red, but stop at green. What am I?, they are everywhere, and everyone can solve them. Our popular culture is permeated with them from our films to our education. A quick Google search can lead us to a vast array of riddles and similar puzzles unprecedented in history. In recent mass media, the oldest and most enduring riddle is probably "Why did the chicken cross the road?" Throughout history, collections of riddles have been made, such as those from the Exeter Book, but these often consist of collections of less than a hundred riddles in length and all of the same type. But before the era of the printing press and mass printing, these collections were not widely available, so most people are not used to them. But there is one source that has existed for thousands of years, written long ago and familiar to many.

Riddles have been around and popular for thousands of years. They predate the writing of the Bible and the Greek Empire. Both the Bible and Greek literature contain them, and the authors seem to be somewhat familiar with them. This means that riddles and the concept of riddles are at least 1000 years old. One riddle dates back to a 1650 BC math problem, but the riddle itself was written much later. The original problem was conceived purely as a mathematical, and not as a riddle. For the people of those times, riddles were essentially metaphors or simply questions/statements with hidden meanings. Aristotle described them as useful in philosophy because they can indirectly explain concepts that otherwise could not be explained.

The Bible was written as early as 1400 BC. So the riddle from this book will certainly claim the title of the oldest riddle. One of the Old Testament stories, the story of Samson, discusses a riddle told by Samson to his friends: “From the eater, something to eat; something sweet out of the strong." He tells his friends this riddle and tempts them by offering them fine underwear and clothes as a reward. They go to his wife and threaten her if she does not give them an answer. She does so, but Samson continues to kill to punish them for going behind his back to his wife. In this case, the riddle is used to punish the men and, in turn, their society by demonstrating bad greed.

As far as one can tell, this riddle from the Bible is one of the oldest, if not the oldest riddle in the history of mankind. Even though it is very old and one of the first recorded mysteries, it has the elegance of any riddle in existence today and will likely be relevant for thousands of years to come.
