The gardener without decades of experience will do properly to
contemplate planting a combination of grasses rather than a stable
turf of a single species. If he understands exactly what he's
doing, and understands how to manage the conditions which
may assault his specific single species of lawn, the
odds are it will survive and prosper without serious
injury. Nevertheless the novice rarely has the mandatory ability and
knowledge with this, and, even if he does, he usually runs
into unforeseen trouble. If conditions change--such being an
acutely wet or dried year--a solid turf of 1 species may
suffer severely, while one comprising a few grasses will
pull through in good shape.

Illness is a good example of the kind of issue a combination
can help avoid. The fungi which assault grasses are very
certain within their action. That is, some will attack fescues
however not bluegrasses, while Seedsman seeds others attack bents although not
fescues. Except for decay, which can be largely airborne, most of
these turf disorders are spread by contact from one edge to
another.

If the turf is made up of more than one species, this plant-
to-plant contact is broken. I have seen one element of a
garden, seeded completely to Common Kentucky Bluegrass, decrease by
late August when infected by helminthosporium leaf place, while
another part of the same lawn--planted with Chewing's Fescue
and Highland Bent as well as the bluegrass--showed only
a periodic area suffering from the leaf spot. Equally areas
were maintained exactly the same.

Another advantageous asset of mixtures is that they tend to regulate
themselves to the varying land situations often discovered within
a lawn, and and to differences in sun and shade. It is perhaps not
unusual for the exact same garden to own one place that receives
three hours of sunshine while a brief distance out it has
sunlight all day long.

One of the very true problems a seedsman has, as an example,
is in proposing a grass to the person who doesn't know very well what
a sunny garden is. I have Seedsman seeds actually studied lawns that your
manager said obtained sunlight "all day long long" and discovered they'd
four hours or less.

This is often true in cities, where in fact the distinct parkway
woods and the house variety barriers that take off the sun till
late each morning and then stop it again early in the
afternoon.

By doing only a little study, which often quantities to
wondering a representative at the local nursury or home offer
store, you will see the perfect combination of lawn seed for
your needs and avoid several difficult and time-consuming
problems.
