You want to impress your boss. You want to get into their good graces, which can be tough. That doesn’t mean it’s impossible. But you’ll need to put in the work. Here are some suggestions that you can put to good use. By the end of the list, you should have plenty of ideas on pulling this off.
Work on Your Resume
One of the many ways that can help you impress your new boss is by making an excellent impression on them. Work on your resume. That’s one of the first things that prospective hiring managers and potential bosses will see. If you’re not sure about what to do or how to improve your resume further, get help. Some companies help with that, so reach out to a reliable resume consulting service. They can whip your resume into shape and help it stand out from the rest. From using elements that are specific to your industry to using a format that highlights your skills, the right resume can make you unforgettable. That’s one way to impress a prospective boss.
Get to Know Them
If you get the job, the next thing you need to do is get to know your boss. What do they like? You may also want to take your cue from the rest of the team. Observe how everyone treats the boss. Your teammates can tell you a lot about your boss, too, so you’ll know what to avoid if you don’t want to get on your boss’ bad side. Pay extra attention to what might make your boss unhappy or upset, too.
Commit to Learning
Acting like you know everything won’t impress your boss and will only highlight how little you know. Instead, show that you’re willing to learn. There’s no end to the training you can receive. If your boss sees how much you value learning and how every training improves your skills, that may get your boss to see you in a different light or appreciate the effort and hard work you put into improving your skills. Before long, your boss might even send you to leadership and management seminars to train you further.
Be Part of the Team
Every boss loves a team player. Showing your boss that you cooperate and collaborate with your teammates easily will earn you more brownie points. You can also show how willing you are to help your teammates or how you stand up for your team. That’s another way to impress your superior. Make sure your efforts don’t go overboard. It’s all right to help others but don’t let them abuse you, too. Cut back on that if they’re starting to rely on you too much to do their work. Set firm boundaries. Help them but only to an extent, so they don’t take advantage of you.
Be Accountable
If you made a mistake, be accountable for it. Don’t try to shift the blame to someone else. That’s one way to gain your boss’ respect. Being accountable for your actions shows that you have integrity and honesty, qualities that all good bosses appreciate.
